Came across this photo in another forum, identified as an A6M, but I don’t think so – it’s a 2 seater (at least) for starters. Anyone here got any clues?

Possibly an A-5 or Aichi DA-3 Val. If neither of those guesses are correct then I’m stumped

Nakajima B5N?

I think there were a few two-seat A6Ms.
In fact, Paul Allen’s got one. (Not sure if it was built as such, or converted, though).

Looks to me that it’s an abandoned aircraft with a US serviceman posing in front of it. The rear canopy looks very much like the one in Topgun1984’s photo with the sliding section missing.

There was, as already pointed out, a 2 seater trainer version of the Zero. That looks like one.

Well,
IMHO this is a Fake fotograph… i looked on the internet for Zero trainers and the Canopy layout in this picture is just wrong…
1. This has a “Texan like” canopy with the rear canopy sliding forward (, but all the foto’s i did came across of the internet (search for A6M2-K Zero Trainer) although most pictures are from model aircraft, they do point out that the rear canopy is sliding backwards…
2.That pole you see in the middle of the cockpit is not common on the foto’s i found on the internet.
3. The guy infront of the aircraft doesn’t look that Japanese to me..
4. It’s hard to imagine that Japanese smoked pipes ;)…
Here is a small picture of a “real” Zero 2 seater…

The tailplane is in the wrong place for an A6M2-K or A6M5. Also unless the photo has been reversed there should be an access panel on the rear fuselage. It isn’t a T.6 type as the whole setup is wrong. Now to find out what it is.

I’m sure it is a Kyushu K10W1 (Oak). Trainer. Became the Navy’s standard intermediate trainer.

3) It could have been taken on a captured airfield.
4) Why not?

But the whole canopy layout is different…
@ John
I think you are right on this one… look at this image

Told you guys it just looked like a Texan ;).. and this shurely does look like one (exept for the tail section).. and it shure does confirm my forward sliding rear canopy… (nice word combo huh?)
Edit:
Just found this link relating this aircraft to the T-6 Family

More like a Yale to me…. 😉

Yes, the K10W1 was developed as an extensively modified all metal version based on the NA-16.

Anyone recognise the tail end of the other aircraft in the picture.

Probably some sort of seaplane: folding wings, no tailwheel.
I’d opt for Aichi E13A.

That’s more or less what I thought. That or a Tachikawa Ki-36 Ida.The sliding rear canopy is not usual and the fact the tailplane is set well back from the fin leading edge with a short rear fuselage section showing rules out most types. The two seat zeros were field conversions, normally

Tachikawa Ki36 Or Ki55 Ida, same aeroplane but the 55 was used as a trainer. I just noticed the bomb racks under the fuselage so this is probably a Ki 36.
