Unified European Air Force?

Perhaps this would get an interesting discussion going…

How about an intrinsic WEU air force, to be formed over the next 15 years? Commanded by some yet-to-be formed Department of War (can’t call it defense anymore these days, with all those international peace-keeping and peace-enforcing missions) housed in Brussels?

Similar to the US ANG, each member state can keep its own smaller air force for ‘domestic’ use (SAR, transport, things like that) and other reasons considered necessary. These would also be a nice place to slowly put an end to non-European aircraft like the F-16, or non-standard aircraft like the AMX and eventually Mirages.

The ‘central’ European air force would consist mainly of Typhoons as its main fighter, with the Rafale as the main aircraft for the European carrier fleet, consisting of the two original French boats (the current CdG and the other one they’re planning to build) and the currently proposed British carriers.
Support would consist of mainly a fleet of A400M transport and SpecOps aircraft (ESM etcetera, getting Euro EW assets finally streamlined), and with A320s as tankers.

Any thoughts?

Regards,

Arthur
