Units that used Cottam Airfield, Yorks in 1940?

Hi All

Thanks to all who replied to my last thread!

I am trying to find out about Cottam Airfield in Yorkshire (about 11 miles West of Bridlington) and I know absolutely nothing about it!

Apparently it was never used for Ops, but had other uses?

Please can someone give me the Unit/s that were using Cottam in August 1940 and tell me what it was being used for?

Does anyone have a book called ‘Action Stations’ which gives any info on Cottam?

Thanks

Thanks dhfan

Yes, I found on the internet that later in the war it became a bomb dump. One site said a satellite for Driffield since September 1940 and another said it was also an MSU of 42 Group.

Thanks again for replying

As you say, never used on ops.
Following from Action Stations 4, (smart-a**e, got ’em all!), but severely abbreviated.
Opened as satellite for Driffield 09/39.
Despite poor road access and odd wind effects developed as bomber station for 4 Group. Usual 3 concrete runways, peri track, hardstandings completed 09/40.
Rejected as unsuitable due to adverse weather conditions caused by position close to N York Moors.
No record of any flying unit based there.
03/44 B24 made forced landing.
91MU bomb dump then abandoned.
Being cleared early 80s so assume nothing at all left now.

Not very far away, just south of York a different location problem arose at Acaster Malbis. Built on the bank of the River Ouse. Permanently soggy and nearly as often fog-bound.

Gross stupidity isn’t a modern invention.
