Hi all !
Yesterday I received a call from a time witness. He told me, he watched the following crash;
It was in the last day of the war in the area around Neustadt/Ostsee in germany (03.05.1945). He had seen that a fighter attacked a train west of the little village “Süsel”. The fighter attacked the train in low altitude and in the line of the tracks. On the last waggon was a 2cm Vierlingsflak installed a hit the fighter.
The time witness has seen that the figher crashed in the near of the train, the pilot had no time to bail out and was killed during the crash. Four hours later, the british units came into this area, the war was out here…
Now the time witness ask me, if I have a name of the pilot.
In my database I have no crash whis this location this date.
Two Typhoon force landet in the near of Neustadt, the pilots was not killed.
Two Typhoon crashed in the near of Kiel this date, the pilots was killed. But Kiel is to far away from Süsel.
One Typhoon have a unknown crash location, the pilot was buried in Hamburg Cemetary. His name is J.A. Brown. On what locations crashed his aircraft? date of crash is the 03.05.1945
Another Typhoon crashed ca. 4km south of Süsel. The locations are Gleschendorf. It is possible that this crash is the same as the witness had seen. The pilot is G.F.H. Webb and was buried in Hamburg too.
I hope somebody can help me to identify the pilot of the crash west of Süsel !
Best Regards from Kiel
Nils

Andy,
this are the result of my research too.
The date of the crash is sure, it was exact the 03.05.1945. I have spoken with the time witness later again and ask him about the date.
On this date crashed a lot of other Typhoons and some Tempest. No one in the near of this area, at once the a/c of JA Brown. The last seen of him in North East direction and than hit by flak – I think this is the fighter where I am looking for. No MACR / KU exist.
I have no information about raids over Kiel or Schleswig-Holstein this day from the USAF…
The witness told me too, three or four fighter attacked the train. After the crash of one of him, the other fighter turnt over the crashsite for any minutes before flown away.
Maybe somebody have informations about the 181. sqdn and a report of this crash ??

Nils,
2nd May 1945 Typhoon 1b 124 Wing W/C G F H Webb DFC Shot down by flak, north of Gleschendorf. Buried in Hamburg Cemetary.
3rd May 1945 Typhoon 1b 181 sqn Flt/sgt J A Brown Missing on sweep. Last seen North East of Kiel. Flak ? Buried in Hamburg Cemetary.
Does this help ? There are other losses on those dates, how certain is your witness of the date. These are only RAF losses, as well, what about the USAF ? The above stats are taken from Norman Franks’ ‘Fighter Command Losses vol 3’.
Andy.
