I am with Anon on this one. The object is upside down and is the top of a tripod where the three legs attach too, the whole wooden structure looks homemade to me so could be for anything. The military used tripods for all sorts of stuff including dumpy levels, theodolites, signalling lamps and heliographs to name a few.

Mount?
Looks like the leg attachment bracket for a tripod for what could be a sighting head. There would be a spirit level and a scale to measure azimuth and elevation for artillery firing info. That (expensive) bit is missing.
The (what would be) horizontal bar and attachment to said bracket looks a bit home-made to me. It could have been a modified theodolite stand for use by an astronomer for his telescope?
Anon.

Looks like it should be sat on top of a trig point on a hill somewhere.
