Unknown Old Aircraft from the SDASM collection

Hi,

the San Diego Air and Space museum runs a huge account on flickr.com. I have to say the people there are not the greatest experts (these are here…:D) in aircraft naming. About the attached picture, they don’t know the name at all. Nor do I.

Can you help?

Thank you for every answer!

That’s a different picture than in the Putnam, but it seems to be in the same configuration. So there are at least three photos of the beast…

Thank you Graham! I knew I could rely on you here!

Maybe the picture you are referring is seen in the Breguet’s Challenge (no. 840, also referencend in theareodrome.com):

On theaerodrome.com, they had made a successfull request for it by these pictures it in 2012 already, but made no comment to the SDASM flickr account…

The picture is neither a DH6 not a DH4. It appears to be of prewar vintage, with elements of Curtiss design. I’m thinking here of the Beachey Tractor…

Or I was, but I turned the page and found the Loening-Milling Tractor Biplane built by Curtiss and delivered to the US Army on 30 December 1914. It was unacceptable and not purchased. The text describes the aircraft as structurally and aerodynamically far behind the earlier Curtiss Models J and N – I can only agree.

Source Putnam’s Curtiss Aircraft 1907-1947 by Peter M Bowers. The photo shows the aircraft with a large single radiator behind the propeller and an additional nosewheel. There’s no suggestion in the text of modifications, a second example or any predecessor, but they are pretty clearly the same design.

I don’t think so

Are you sure you’re not getting confused with the DH-4?

D.H. 6s were supplied initially to USN 1917 for patrols off Ireland .Post 1918 to Chamberlain Aircraft: still re-engining ( Clergets) and being sold on in 1929.

Are you saying that the picture is of a D.H.4 ? 🙂

De Havilland D.H. 6 I think ( British).

I don’t think so

Many supplied across the Atlantic around 1917 as the U.S.A. was largely incapable of making aircraft at the time.

As opposed to the “if it isn’t Commonwealth (or at least European) we don’t want to know” attitude here.

😉 😀

Bumped up for a bit more attention.

If nobody answers, I have to go to theaerodrome.com! This won’t boost your reputation here!:diablo:

You’d probably do better there, as you’re more likely to get an answer identifying an American aeroplane (I believe they call them ‘airplanes’ or some such) on a predominantly US forum.
