All I know is that this has made into an ashtray but was brought home from Italy at the end of the war which may suggest not allied aircraft ?
The crown is evidently convex (domed ) but unlike a Pratt & Whitney piston.
Diameter measures approx. 145 mm (merlin 135 mm)
The forge manufacturer numbers read :
BACE 64 A5P
963A 6P
There are traces of four or five inspection stamps but are barely visible…….
Can anyone of you engine buffs out there, throw any light on the subject……??

‘Master and keeper’ (at least trying to be)…..of a very, very small area of knowledge! 😀
In answer to your question, yes, it’s been cut-down and ‘ashtrayed’ by some enterprising ‘erk’!

Hmmm…..hard to say! Any chance of a shot taken so the edge of the crown appears horizontal? 😮
(Did you get my PM? :))
C.D.Warren,(Master and keeper of the Font of knowledge),;) This appears to me as the “Shortest” ie high, piston I have seen, has the skirt been machined down, or is it as it was initialy made?.

If you can post a photograph of your ashtray side-on so I can see the profile of the domed crown I’ll have a guess at saying if it is from a Mercury or a Pegasus.

Thanks again for coming back to me on this one …………:D

I’ve finally dug my Bristol Pegasus / Mercury piston out of storage.
Mine is also stamped ‘B.A.C. E.64’ (note the space after the ‘C’) and ‘A.5.P’ on the underside of one gudgeon-pin boss.
Stamped under the crown is ‘557H/1’ which is presumably an identification stamp for the material or forging batch. There are three oval inspection stamps around this, all of which are badly stamped and difficult to read; two characters over two characters. They could be ‘BA’ over a two-digit number.
A final stamp under the crown reads ‘U5’ in a circle.
