I’ve just checked my Microlight club’s website (GS Aviation) and noticed that this Friday, the aircraft I have a share in, is to accompany a pilotless Spitfire across the English Channel from Calais to Manston.
Well its not really a pilotless Spitfire, its really a quarter scale radio controlled model and the ‘pilot’ controlling it will be in the EV 97 Eurostar (only just over twice the size of the model) flying alongside.
Considering the amount of paperwork I have to produce for a simple flight trial, sorting this must have been a huge organisational task.

Not new…
This was done with a huge Danarm-powered model 1:3 Spit back in the 1970’s. Jim Davis Models of Erdington, Birmingham built a bunch of huge models. Three Spit’s, a ‘109 and a Lanc’. The pilot was Dave Wright, I remember he flew it from a Jet Ranger, performing the Take-off & landing on the deck. I’m guessing this was 1975. Many fewer rules and formalities in those days of course….which is just as well as they’d have ignored them all anyway. I’ve just discovered that Jim passed away last month.

One of the more unusual topic titles I’ve seen on this forum!
Of course, we’ll need photos… 😉
