Wasn’t sure whether to put this in Historic aviation or modern military, so thought i’d put it her (mods can move it if need be). When walking upstairs at home the other day, i heard this really weird sounding aircraft fly over, sounded more like a ‘WOOOOoooooooo’ and i ran upstairs to my bedroom window to see what it was. Flying off into the distance, i saw the rear which appeared to be thin, perhaps circular, with a circular orange glow, probably the afterburner from a jet, at the rear of the fuselage. I also couldn’t see the wings so i suppose it had relatively thin wings.
Does anyone know what this could be? My guess is a Hawker Hunter, but i don’t know what one would be doing flying around Leicestershire. Cheers, Rob

Comedians, all of you! 😀
The most unique sounds I’ve heard? Both of them were heard walking into my office. One was an E-2C Hawkeye, that thing sounds like a sick blender or something. The other was a B-2. VERY quiet. Once it got a short distance away you couldn’t even hear it, you’d swear it was a glider.

Bae 146 on approach – WWII Dive bomber, I think – its hard to describe anyone else know what it sounds like – try it youself – do a very deep hum meanwhile open your mouth briefly twice in quick concession.

The P-51 has a whistling noise due to the wind blowing over the open gun ports in the wings – never heard it in anything else.
The Meteor I saw flying at Duxford in 2000 sounded like a high-powered vacuum cleaner to me – loved it! 🙂

This thread may not be as daft as I first thaught. All planes, wether piston or jet, have their own “sound”.Memorable sounds for me are………
F-104 doing a tight turn.Sounded to me like “tearing metal”
P-51, the air version of a street rod.
Bell UH-1D that “classic” chopper sound 🙂
Concord flying over my house, close to finals, around 6.30pm on a sunny afternoon 😀
Hows about posting some sounds of the planes that we love. You never know,it might even turn into a reference section 😎

May not have been afterburner, just an orange circular glow, had a very distinct engine noise as well (don’t think my ‘woooo’ would have gave hint to it’)

After burner would discount Hunters…
