Unusual Uses For Aero-Engines (Revisited)

Now that petrol is down to under £1 a litre, we thought it was about time to dust-off the old standby generator…

Peter is not going to rely on wind power to keep his workshop going if the ‘lights go out.’

Very true.

This one is more to do with the weird world of Flight Engineering, where customers come along with crazy ideas (the sort of crazy ideas I have too) and we make them reality. I doubt whether this will ever power very much, although it will be wired to a bank of 63A sockets, so it can. The generator is more of an inertial load really.

I’m surprised nobody mentioned the date, but actually, Stuart’s reply makes me wonder if the joke should be on me!

Not as unlikely as you might think, when the old steam powered showmans locomotives had worn out to the point of uneconomical repair, they had huge diesel/ petrol engines bolted on top of their boilers with belt drives to the huge dynamo mounted on the front, that powered the fair ground rides and lights.

Hook it up to a single LED, and really annoy the environmentalists.

Brilliant – now you need to connect it to something really humdrum, like a washing machine…
