Unveiled Today – G-AJRB!

at Eggesford was the rebuilt Auster J1 G-AJRB. Now I suppose I should be here showing some photos of the wonderful work done by Richard Webber and friends, but I didnt have my camera with me, did I.

Am arranging for some to be emailled to me in the week, so will post then.

Best wishes,

Martin

Both……I first met Paul when I was at The Squadron at North Weald and did the history of the Chipmunk (BBMV) before I did that of the T-6G (DDMV). One day when we were discussing the finer points of T-6s over the phone, he asked me if I had heard of what he had bought next and so I replied that I hadnt worked on any Mustangs before, to be told that he wasnt talking about the history then, but did I want a flight in the back. Well, what could I say.

I was still living at home then and when I told my Mum ‘I’m going to have a Mustang flight’, it was just a ‘yes dear’ and that was the end of it. Eastenders was far more interesting.

I did SUSY and DDMV both on the same day at the 1992 USAAF Fly-In at North Weald with Rob Simpson flying the T-6G. I managed 40 mins in SUSY, with a trip up to Little Staughton and back.

I flew in the T-6G again this time with Paul at North Weald at a later date – he was a true gentleman and will always be missed. (I loved the Ilmor Christmas cards, they were always out of this world).

But last year, when I was kindly offered a short flight in the aeroplane that had started it for me (BBMV), I just didnt know what to say and still believe that it will be for sentimental reasons, one of my all time favourites. That quick flight meant a lot to me.

Best wishes,

Martin

Arrh, i see, wasnt sure if you had been for a trip in the T6, I guess that was with then owner Paul Reading, sadly BBMV has now moved on to pastures new. Much missed as i have had flown and looked after the A/C for many years, hopefully she will be well looked after by her new owner. DDMV still resides here at Sywell and hopefully will do for many years to come. Paul is greatly missed by us all, a loverly man who did much for Sywell and was allways happy to share his aeroplanes with those that spent the time to be interested, im sure he is still keeping an eye on us from upon high. One of my fondest memories of BBMV is doing the missing man flyby for Paul at the Sywell Summer Ball the year he was killed, i pulled up out of the formation in MV and struggled to see though the tears to land:(

I know thats there are lots of aeroplanes out there with that plaque in, but you’re forgetting dear old G-BBMV. Was soooo pleased to finally get the chance to have a trip in that last year. Makes me smile everytime I think of it.

Thanks Martin – thats spooky!!

Not sure I’d make a better job of the kit today than 27 years ago – even if I could find one – IIRC Airfix smashed/dropped the AOP mould, though there was a rumour that they modified it to the Antartic version.

Anyroad, I’ll find one one day no doubt!

Yes Blue Robin, but the whole idea was for viewers to scroll down and read about vintage aeromodelling as well ! Any way thanks for including it. It brings back memories of my PPL training there in 1979/80 with the great CFI Paul Smith.

Ah Northampton Model Shop – great place! – have known Nicky Evans since I were knee high to a (L4? 😀 ) grasshopper…and I bought my first ever Airfix kit there with my dad – I was five….. the 1:72 AOP Auster of course!

TT

‘RB now has a permit to test and so..flying should take commence in the next couple of days. I look forward to the day when I can joined the ranks of all those persons before me (when she has her LAA permit).

As to the Auster 6 kit, at Eggesford is VX113 the very same aeroplane that Airfix modelled its AOP.6 version on. Small world aviation.

I don’t know. Hopefully will be able to give you an answer on Sunday. Tomorrow am off to the model show at Yeovilton.

Martin

After recovering from spending far too much at Yeovilton, I ventured up to Eggesford today and besides flying in the Auster Mk.3, asked about the compass and it seems that it was not part of the inventory when the airframe was delivered there. As to its location, no one seems to know.

Actually i think RB must have been puffing so much from lifting two lardies with fuel on a warm spring day 🙂

Just been going through my old attachments. Here’s another photo

Pity I lost about half of my photo collection – I would have more to show.

Cor, I’m impressed by that panel shot.

I never knew old ‘JRB ever had that much oil pressure. Must’ve been a cold day! 😀

To be honest I’d forgotten she was built when that black crackle finish was standard for instrument panels. Have to say I think the grey looks better.

May 2002. Note too the old hangars and no fence – progress huh?

So yes the panel was black. Where’s the P-type compass gone? 😮

Very nice, the interior is as nice as the exterior. Congratulations on a well done restoration. Is the panel original paint or did you have to repaint it? I guess that is a silly question, considering the age of the machine I’d say that it looked a little worn before the restoration.

Just to prove that GPS doesn’t come as standard. Photo taken on Saturday by John Cooke.

Best wishes to all,
