G’ day all formy’s 😀
I was up crook last week in the middle of the night/morning as per usual  , and looked at the tele on ABC Channel 2, and saw a sorta war movie on 😎 .
I think it was called ” The Purple Plain ” ?, but it was 3.00am so I am not sure.:o
Welll I saw a few Aussie Mossie’s I think, some T-6’s and an Anson 😎 .
Forgot the actor’s name’s, but the story I think was in Asia somewhere, they take off in a Mossie(Oz), with three on board with one in the back an old Pom Army dude, and go roaring off across the country side.
Later in the flight one of the Merlin donk’s lose’s oil, and crappy’s it’s self and catch’s fire.
And then down they go real fast, the footage was pretty crappy here as the way it looked, they would made a real nice smokin hole!!.
Well he come’s in slidin and burst’s in to flame’s, and the pilot’s ok, but his pal next to him is burning, so he get’s him out.
The old pom army dude in the back smashe’s his way out, and the Mossie burn’s 🙁
(hope it was only a prop, but back then they melted and burnt everything hey 😡 ).
Story end’s with the pilot dude, dragging the burnt dude to safety across mile’s(Km’s for metric people’s) of dry scrub land, and forrest covered mountain’s that went on for a long way’s.
The whingin old pom dude could not hack it, and goe’s off his head and goe’s on walk about by himself, then shoot’s himself in the head.
Finish’s back at an airfield with Mossie’s and T-6’s, and a Anson pull’s up 😎 .
Anyone know the Movie, was it The Purple Plain ?
Nice footage here and there too, was it real War stuff ??
Any truth to the story, or was it all a made up war story ?
Anyway, Thank’s in advance if any formy’s can help in anyway. 😉

I could swear the seagulls in Finding Nemo were saying “Maaate”, though apparently the subtitles say “Mine.”
Maaate works a lot better, IMHO.

Oiii stop giving away our national treasures..
Mate…:D Also the word mate can come in varying pronunciations..Like “Gday mate” ,which is the general way..Then there is ,”Maaaaaaaaaattttee”,when you have bought over a carton of beer to the mates place. There is “OI,MATE,Move the Bl00dy car!!”.Also the sulky version of “Maaaate!!That football was nowhere near the sideline!!”:D
We call everyone mate over here, dogs, cats, anything living as we are all so drunk we can never remember names..:p

Here are a couple of useful websites for deciphering the Oz language. Starts with an interesting description of toilets or dunnies.:D

The Aussie language..
Nothing quite like it…Yep the ABC is top notch in regards to early films.Another great one is “The Battle of the River Plate”,”The enemy below” and many others.
Don,t worry Stormy.Any Digger who puts a shine to putting down the Ocker in us all deserves a go over with a bottle of Fourex. Then they can do a Harold Holt down to the local pub to down a few mystery bags while we make a dash to get away from the coppers.Geez my Ocker is rusty lately:D

I think it needs to be pointed out that the main “dude” was Gregory Peck.
Did an awfully good job portraying a Canadian, IIRC.
More to the point, the ABC is one of the few places on earth where the The Purple Plain can still be seen.
However, it requires one to stay up way, way late, preferably on the turps (as demonstrated by Stormy).

Anyone got an Oz to English translation book!!
Well, I’m qualified in both languages, but it’s a bit tricky…
As John’s pointed out, the film ‘The Purple Plain’ was made in 1954 and, yes, at least one Mosquito was burnt in the making. It’s based on a novel, by H.E. Bates, and is fiction, not fact, although the historical context of the book is very realistic. Bates served as (I think?) an Intelligence Officer on a Stirling Squadron, writing ‘The Stories of Flying Officer X’ as well as an account of the Buzz bombs which was suppressed during the war. Printed finally in the 1990s, IIRC ‘Flying Bombs over England’. He then went onto write ‘The Darling Buds of May’ et al.
More accurate details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._E._Bates
