An upgraded A-50 radar reconnaissance airplane will reach Russia’s air force inventory in 2008, Russia’s air force commander-in-chief, Vladimir Mikhaylov, has announced.
“The A-50 (radar detection and reconnaissance) will be in a new appearance, much already has been done in this regard. It will be equipped with the newest equipment which will allow using it for not less than 20 more years,” Mikhaylov declared to journalists at the Chkalovskiy airfield outside Moscow.

Two Tu-160 strategic missile carriers and two Tu-95MS strategic bombers took off from the Saratov Oblast’s Ehgel’s airfield and two more Tu-22M3 long-range bombers lifted into the air from the Sal’tsy airfield in the Pskov Oblast.
The long-range aviation airplanes fulfilled the missions placed before them within the framework of the joint exercise over Byelorussia’s ranges and returned without landing in the republic to their own base airfields.
During the exercise, as Russia’s air force commander-in-chief, General of the Army Vladimir Mikhaylov, reported, it is planned to demonstrate in action the upgraded Su-27UBM1 multirole fighter and the A-50 long-range radar detection airplane, the new Mi-28N (‘Night Hunter’) airplane already is operating in the sky, and also electronic countermeasures. During the actions of the troops, special projectiles, missiles and other combat systems will be used, in particular ‘Krasnopol’ artillery guided projectiles and other modern equipment.
