USA Holiday

As it was our 25th anniversary together, the wife agreed to go to the USA and visit her sister via a little detour for her to Gracelands followed by a few museums and Chino, the results of which are below. Ill add as i sort through them

I know this hasnt got wings but Coastal Command did spend a lot of time protecting these and as the SS Jeremiah O’Brien is one of only two remaining fully functional Liberty ships thought id add it, the next ship will have wings on board

Ant

Do you think this might help if you were going to build a B50???

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i79/Rob1968/20130503Chino1111509_zps3d2cb90e.jpg
it was lying round the corner from the storage area

I took a shot of the notice board in front of the Siemens-Shuckart D.IV but when i looked at it i only took the name as I did not recognise it,Air Britain has it as a replica
http://www.abpic.co.uk/search.php?q=N1094G&u=reg

You really have to do the trip, we’ve been putting it off for years even though we have family in Phoenix as we didnt think we could afford it. I tried costing it myself and knocked it on the head when I got to a stupid figure but then went to our local co-op who have a make your own holiday and they came up well under my price. To put it into context we went to a nice (5*) hotel in Malta 2 years ago for 12 nights, b and b only and the USA trip was only £900 more for the two of us for 14 nights. Considering what we got im pleased with what we paid but wont be doing anything like it for a few years now. I had to put a lot of ground work in before booking, including pointing out to the travel agent that they initially booked the wrong Ontario, they had booked us a flight to Ontario Canada not L.A. and came back with a total cost of £9000!!!!! Nearly fell off my chair when they told me that one.

Thanks for all these Rob, it looks like a dream trip! Some really interesting stuff, it’s hard to know where to begin.

That four engine wing section is KC97, but I think PoF intend to use it in the restoration of the B50 Superfortress “Lucky Lady II” which you got a shot of at Chino. As I understand it, B50 and KC-97 wings are basically identical.

Really interesting to see the Siemens-Shuckart D.IV at PoF East, I never realised they had one. Anyone know its history?

It’s just this kind of American museum tour that’s on my bucket list, I’m not envious in the slightest, this shade of green is purely coincidental…:D

To be honest you need two days at Pima if you can, this last lot brings us back us back to the start and our flight back to Manchester. Two weeks, 7 flights, 4 hotels, 1200 miles in the hire car and all for not much more than a holiday to a decent resort in the med and back to Duxford the following week.

Thanks for looking

Rob_in_NM

from the carpark at the museum you could see A10 and Hercules movement all day, looking at google maps recon there is a nice spot at the end of DM runway if you go right and first left out of the museum to watch. When we were there i guess around 15 A10’s came back around 17.30 in dribs and drabs for half an hour, it may be worth a look

Here are a few from the Museum at Pima

Thanks! As the Tucson area is only a 6 hour drive away, I need to plan another trip. I could spend all day at Pima, and have access to DMAFB (where they have a nice air park, as well as nice and inexpensive lodging).

Preserved Aircraft & long forgotten Airshows
thanks for the updates, the first one had got me and didn’t note it was an Ajeet, do you think the other airframe is a Buckeye?

Interesting to see the YAL-1 at DM/AMARG. I was down that way in March 2012, and the aircraft had just arrived.

You could be right on the C97 was thinking at first B50 put you can just make out a curve where its been cut above the wing. The first pic has got me as the canopy looks Skyraider but the tubular frame?

The following day we drove down to the sister in laws at Queen Creek just south east of Phoenix, so while the wife and sister in law caught up i took a 30 min drive to Mesa and went to the Arizona Wing of the Confederate Air Force Museum

4-engine? A C-97 I’d say. I see an A-1E in the mix somewhere!

Made my way out to Planes of Fame East last October when visiting the Grand Canyon… thought it was nice for being out in the middle of nowhere.

If you are still road-tripping in the desert southwest, I highly recommend a stop at the War Eagles Museum in Santa Teresa, NM (down on the Mexican border, not far from El Paso, TX). Fantastic people there… I’ve arrived a couple of times about an hour before the museum was scheduled to open. The staff that also arrived early gladly let us in, and were kind enough to let us crawl around a few of the airplanes. and like Planes of Fame East, there are lots of drip trays at War Eagles… if I’m not mistaken, all but 3 of the planes are still in flying condition.

A few days later we drove up to the Grand Canyon, the road took us right outside the front door of Planes of Fame East, as can be seen this has more of a feel for aircraft in use rather than a museum as there were drip trays every where (which isnt a bad thing). These are from inside, outside is more of a store
