USAAF R/C aircraft identity sought?

Hello,

I’m a volunteer with the Classic Air Force at Newquay and yesterday a gentleman donated to us, a small aeroplane model, that appears to have either been radio controlled or trimmed for flight. In the forward fuselage section facing backwards there is a cylinder shaped connection to which I presume some kind of power was fitted.

The gentleman’s Father was a greengrocer who supplied the USAAF in Hertfordshire during the war and at Bushey in 1945 he was given this aircraft which for years has been up in his loft.

Can anyone tell us what it actually is and what it was used for? Its got us stumped!

Best wishes,

Martin

Tim,

Many thanks for such a quick reply. I emailed the owner of the website and he came back with the information that it is indeed as you say and is an IMA Target Model. Nearly all of them were painted orange and this was the first silver one he’d seen, but then again I will go and have a look in the box to see if it has been repainted! 🙂

For more information on the initial design of the Target, please have a look at:

Thanks again,

Martin

Hi Martin

Likely an aero model (IMA style target) powered by Jetex or earlier equivalent? If you wade through the Jetex archive / history of micro jets you’ll find illustrations of similar items. See illustration of UK built IMA item in following article. Veron produced similar designs for aero modellers in the late 1940s too.
