There’s more than one surviving Douglas TBD Devastator (wreck).

There’s a pic of Shoo Shoo Baby in the first post.

More (old) pix of Shoo Shoo Baby

atc pal,
Air Classics Quarterly Review Vol 2 no. 4 has an article that includes quite a lot of detail about Shoo Shoo Baby’s wartime and subsequent exploits. Here are scans of a couple of snippets from that article . . .

I really like the XC-142A in front of the Valkyrie…… 4 engine tilt-wing VSTOL prototype that did carrier landings & take-offs in the late 1960s.

I would like to remind everyone, if you are ever in the Dayton, Ohio, area stop by the USAF Museum, it is stunning and it is FREE.

And ALL of the firearms on display work, Me & Pete did some M2 .50’s & the pair .30’s on the twin mount for em….

unless anyone requests

B-17 “Shoo – shoo (etc.) – Baby”, a picture, please. My very recently passed away father once flew in her, when he – and she – was in the Royal Danish Air Force. His story, as a passenger, recounts “ripples” running continously from fuselage to wingtip and back on the upper wing surface. He started wondering: “How many times? How long will it last?” I’ve never seen other references to this “vibration” phenomenon before. Was it “standard B-17”?

This is my last lot now (unless anyone requests anything specific!).
A few of the aircraft that are outside.
There is also a huge memorial garden at the far end of the museum, which unfortunately I did not get time to walk around, but some of the monuments are incredible, and very well looked after.
I would recommend the museum to anyone, but give yourself at least 3 days, and be prepared for tired feet at the end of it ! 😀

My next destination was Reno, which I will post some shots on the airshow photo’s forum, but in between I did find something interesting hiding inside one of the airports – I will post a couple of pics (hopefully) tomorrow, on a seperate thread.

Regards,

TMN

Thanks for the comments regarding my photos guys, appreciated. 🙂

This is the start of the last lot now, some of the final hall. Again very dark, but impressively lit aircraft, which made the hall very atmospheric.

I took nearly 700 photos and spent two days in the museum, but I feel like I only scratched the surface! Didn’t get hardly any time to look at the others displays, but I suppose that gives me an excuse to go back at some time!! 😀

PA908

ZRX61,

Thanks for that. All is now clear.

I supplied the Canadians with most of the major missing parts for this one.

After the Van Nuys PR paint job, why did the USAF museum paint it completely again?

Because some anorak at Dayton looked at some WWII photo & decided the star & bar was 1 inch lower than it should have been…. when it fact we’d measured it from other WWII pics so it was a total waste of time.
They also insisted on Egyptian linen for the tail feathers so that will be rotting away nicely now, instead of S**** which would have been perfect & looked exactly the same.

(…and it had nose art on the left engine cowl that had Pete’s daughters name on it…) 🙂

They don’t pay for their resto’s they trade other airframes. That Spit resto cost em a Huey & 2 T28’s…

The left over PR blue paint (Dupont Centari) went to Chino & ended up on a Spit there….

(apparently I can’t post the name of the synthetic fabric, it starts with st & ends with its…)

Great pics 🙂

…and did you notice the Mk Vtrop. MA863 in a new paint scheme?

The first shot I have seen of this.

TMN. May I ask if you can treat us please to a side view of this.

Mark

Funnily enough, I was Googling for MA863 the other day, and turned up this image on the Warbird Registry.

Thanks 🙂 That Spit has my signature hidden away all over it, inside the rudder, tail, ailerons, flaps, wings etc
AND it still has PA908 painted on the firewall.. 🙂

Valkyrie

I think the Valkyrie deserves a little more exposure on this thread!
