USAF Spitfire

Got an email from a pilots son who is after details about the spitfire in the image. His father transfered from the RCAF to the USAF and flew this plane. I have asked him to have a dig around for the ‘tail number’. He is trying to find out as much as he can on this Spit.

MJ serial. A Mk IX.

It would seem to be coded WZ-UU of 309th FS.

Probably early 1944 in Italy…Castel Volturno.

Looks like it’s from the MJ or MU block of serials

Spitfire

Just as I would like to see a P40C or Hurricane in Soviet colours, I would like to see a Spitfire in US colours. This seems like a good example.

Some of it is snobbering though to be fair all of the spitfires flying in the UK have authentic schemes as far as I am aware.

Not sure if it was a squadron or spotting?

regards

Mark
