USAF to test F-16 equipped with MFD + HUD designed by Apple, iHUD.

Mar 31, 2012

An F-16 modified to carry avionics designed by Cupertino based Apple Inc, first flew today at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The F-16 will utilize a new type of display created from a single piece of glass displayed at high resolutions, referred to Apple as the Retina Display. The sharper images will better allow pilots to better distinguish targets on screen, reducing risks of collateral damage.

Tentatively referred to as iHUD, the display will also utilize SIRI, which was recently unveiled last year for the iPhone, allowing users to use hands free operation of mobile devices. SIRI will allow pilots to keep their eye off screen by using voice activated commands.

This is not the first venture into the military industry for Apple. Last year, Apple has sold thousands of militarized iPads to the Singaporean military.
