It depends on the contracts drawn up.
Most likely there will be either a clause that allows the customer to defer within a certain timeframe, or the deferral fee is nominal and far cheaper that having to pay the balance on each jet that gets delivered.

How much does it cost airlines to ‘defer’ orders ? Surely the whole thing is entirely dubious, and as much as Airbus and Boeing can be critcicised for delayed deliveries on their latest models, can airlines be charged for delaying their purchases on readily available types ?
