Useless fact of today —

OK, lets start a new thread only telling useless but interresting facts …

After the Battle of Azincourt in 1415 in which the English beat the French, the French gave the English the name “les goddons”.

Why could this be?

Well, whenever an Englishman was hit, he screamed “God damn”. The french didn’t understand this and hence called them “les goddons” :dev2:

The phrase “rule of thumb” is derived from an old English law which stated that you couldn’t beat your wife with anything wider than your thumb.

# A dogs sense of smell is one of the keenest in nature. If a pot of stew was cooking on a stove, a human would smell the stew, while the dog could smell the beef, carrots, peas, potatoes, spices, and all the other individual ingredients in the stew. In fact, if you unfolded and laid out the delicate membranes from inside a dogs nose, the membranes would be larger than the dog itself

#The oldest weapon still in use in the American military arsenal is the Mameluke hilt sword carried by officers in the U.S. Marine Corps. The sword dates back to the Barbary Pirate Wars of 1801-1807. The sword was given to Lt. Presly O’Banen by the ruler of Tripoli for the aid rendered by the Marines in the Mediteranian Fleet

# The vignette on the reverse of the five-dollar note depicts a likeness of the front of the Lincoln Memorial as it appeared in 1922 when it was first dedicated. At that time, there were only 48 states that made up the United States of America. The names of 26 states were engraved on the front of the Memorial. This is why only the names of 26 states appear in the vignette on the reverse of the five-dollar note. In the upper frieze of the façade in the vignette the states are from left to right: Arkansas, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin, California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, West Virginia, Nevada, Nebraska, Colorado, and North Dakota. In the lower frieze from left to right the names of the states are: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Carolina, Hampshire, Virginia and New York.

A pig’s orgasm lasts for 30 minutes.

Sounds familiar, I think I went out with her once… πŸ™‚

On a serious note, who on earth sets out to discover this kind of thing? Must have been an interesting discussion with the careers officer at school;
“So Smith, have you had any further thoughts on your future career ambitions?”
“Yes sir, I’d like to measure farmyard animal orgasm times.”
“Smith, you’re a bloody wierdo…”

People from the Northern states of the US are named after the Dutch. Back in colonial times, every second Dutchman was either called Jan or Kees. So when the founding fathers of towns like New Amsterdam assimilated with the English-speaking folk, they were given their actual names: YanKees.

Now this is interresting πŸ˜‰ Haven’t thought about that one.
