The other day while on the forum, I by chance clicked on the “User CP’ tab. What I saw was rather interesting.
Under the Latest Reputation Received heading was the following comment from one of the Mederators concerning a posting I had made weeks ago in a thread in the Modern Military Aviation forum titled:
“If the cold war turned hot in the 1980’s”
I made the following comment:
“OK so the Warpac won the imaginary war but NATO (ie the USA) won the real war.”
This comment was made because some of the responses reflected the belief that WARPAC would have won in a walk, which is debatable considering we now know the Warpac military force capability during the 80’s was not always what we belived at the time. How many time have we heard a member of this forum say that NATO (and the US in particular) exagerated the military capability of the USSR/ WARPAC in order to justifiy NATO military force levels in Europe? I thought my comment was appropriate and rather harmless.
In any event, it’s obvious my opinion did not sit well with one of the Moderators and he logged the following “reputation”:
“Provocotive, unessary post. This guy probably has self-esteem problems and try to discount on ultranationalism”.
Perhaps he actually knows what he ment about the last part of that remark.
In any event. I see no excuse for making a comment about my characture. It seems he dosn’t know the difference between making a comment about someones reputation and their characture. What knowledge does this person know about my characture? Can he point to something specific other than he can’t abide someone having a different opinion?
Perhaps the Webmaster can answer me if the individual who logged the comment isn’t man enough to reply. I thought moderators were selected because they had demonstrated objectivity and above rancor.
Perhaps I will be terminated? 😮
Perhaps the comments should be listed under the heading repudiations.
Just for the fun of it, check your User CP folks.
Regards
Sauron

I idly looked through to see who is on a distinguished path and discovered that it seems to be everyone! Not a lot of use, then, or am I missing something important?

I presume then this has something to do with the little green blob that says i am on a distinguished path then ?
I think we are all of a sudden going to see a flurry of activity with this now.

No problem Sauron.

wow I did not exist,, i have such an equal amount of positive and negative feed back, it boggles the mind how neutral I am.

I assumed, incorrectly it would seem, that this reputation feature was available to Mods only. Looking back I have to agree that none of the Mods I know here would log such a comment about me (or anyone else for that matter). If they had an issue about any position or view of mine, they would say it openly and not behind my back. They have all done so a number of times. 🙂 I take back my suggestion that one of the Mods could have logged the comment. It was wrong of me to suggest such a thing.
I don’t know who posted it and I don’t realy care at this point. My purpose was to highlight the feature for those who didn’t know it existed. I think you are correct about why this feature was included. I am certain most members will ignore it. I will.

So it is actually possible to *see* that ? If someone could show me how, I’d be most pleased !
By: google - 3rd October 2004 at 20:59
What? I didn’t even know we could leave reputation messages.
By: Arthur - 3rd October 2004 at 20:50
I think the reputation option was added as some sort of anonymous replacement for the rating system there used to be when this board was still ‘purple’, but which eventually was removed because of bickering
Did the person who made that post actually tell who he was Sauron? The stupid thing was that if Google, Harry or me (the three mods at ModMil) actually would be so offended by your post (which i doubt for the other two, and i know i wasn’t) it would have been easier to do some moderating rather than leave such a poorly written remark.
It wasn’t me who left that message, and both Google and Harry are far less involved in Cold War issues as i am. Could it be that someone is pulling your leg?

All it is is an excuse for pathetic small minded individuals to ‘have the last word.’ If they cant handle a discussion or comments they hide behind their anonymity. It’s easier to say things without revealing their identity.
I’ve more or less been told I should be ashamed of myself. Funnily enough I’m not.

I must say that I was more amused than annoyed due to the juvenile nature of the concept. I would dearly love to see the rational behind the “points award”. I doubt the Mods will want to reveal this structure.
I don’t you’ll find any juvenile members of the forums represented amongst the mods. Nor do we have anything to do with the structure of the reputations and points system, so revealing how it works may be a question for the webmaster or site designers? 😉

I doubt the Mods will want to reveal this structure.
I doubt the mods know any more than you do about it – I know only what I deduced by actually using it once; my thinking about its abuse would come from how I assume it would get used by those involved in the IndoPak flame wars on modmil, if the users were actually around long enough before getting banned.
The mod was not me and I can only assume that Sauron knows who it was because whoever did it left their name in the comments field…

Wait., How do you a know a moderator left the comments if you don’t know how to see who left the comment? As you said above in response to Snapper.

Just learn to roll with the punches

Well I do agree with your remarks and especially the point about abuse and ill-feeling.
I must say that I was more amused than annoyed due to the juvenile nature of the concept. I would dearly love to see the rational behind the “points award”. I doubt the Mods will want to reveal this structure.
I hope others will chime in on this as its to good to let pass.
I wonder if these comments will earn me more points or even outright banishment. Perhaps I will have to stand in the corner. :p

If I remember correctly the reputations thing gives users the opportunity to give or remove reputation ‘points’ from another user – and give a little comment as to why you did what you did. You can always ‘remove’ reputation if you want.
I don’t see the point of the reputation thing since it strikes me that it is wide open for abuse and ill-feeling…

How do you see who left the remark?
