The USN is going to turn the former Super Carrier USS Forrestal into a Artificial Reef and scrap two more Super Carriers and even a number of Aegis Cruisers! Personally, I understand all of the scrapping and sinking except the Aegis Cruisers. Clearly, the US could find a number of homes for them. With possibly Australia interested in them in a short-term lease until the arrival of there own AWD Ships or maybe even Tawian! Hey, maybe even India…….

Not any more, most of their OHP’s are pretty young, the only old vessels they really have left are their Knox’s and that raises the issue of hull numbers versus individual capability. This is not the first time I have heard of issues with the non VLS Tico’s but getting rid of them is fairly painless. After all, no Tomahawk, no ESSM and no SM-3, probably the three most important missiles in the USN inventory.
Clearly, they don’t offer much value to the USN. Especially, consider the new Burke Class Aegis Destoyers coming off the slips daily………(at least how it seems) Yet, they would to me seems like the perfect fit for Tawian nonetheless……………IMO;)

Considering Tawian is operating a large number of very old Frigates and Destroyers. I don’t think absorbing a couple of Aegis Cruisers would be a problem? Of course if Tico’s are unfit for service at all that would be another matter………….If, true funny that it hasn’t become a very public and embarrassing story for the USN? Something worth looking into……….

With the value of scrap metal being what it is at the moment it would be extremely profligate to sink any of these ships.

If Taiwan could afford to operate, buy and find the personnel for these ships on top of the 4 Kidd class then I am sure they would have been pursued, however I have very real doubts about the financial viability of these vessels for Taiwan. That is ignoring the structural issues, the fact these ships have no place in the modern or future USN and are impractical for export. Scrapping them and thus freeing up money for other projects is the right way forward.

You stated “With possibly Australia interested in them in a short-term lease until the arrival of there own AWD Ships”
Completely untrue, wild speculation on your part with no facts to support them, and demonstrating poor research about the prior history of these vessels and the RAN.
I was a member of the group who was involved in the negotiations for these vessels, and know the truth of what I speak.
You on the other hand are an internet admiral with apparently little or no experience of the real thing.
Sorry, but if you are going to push false statements on areas I have direct expertise and experence with, then I am going to call you for them.
Don’t like it? Then don’t push your imaginative speculation as facts.

I was purely speculating on the possibilities. Which, I believe is the main point of any forum. Which, is to discuss the possibilities and share information. (i.e. have a healthy debate!) Question: Should we go back though all of your posting and review your every comment? So, you don’t ever speculate? If, you do you always have expert knowledge and are a master of the subject? Sorry, I really doubt any members of the forum believe I was qouting anything from a official source. As for personal insight…….Great, its clearly appreciated! Yet, calling people names has no place in this forum! Really, in my life I have never heard anyone refer to me as someone who Spreads Lies, Rumors, or Disinformation…………I especially enjoyed the comments about being “A Internet Admiral”? Personally, sounds like you are speculating with no facts to support them and demonstrating poor research before you open your mouth” Sound familar………Please:p :p :p

I don’t know what kind of medication you are on. Yet, I never said anything about transfers! I was just stating the possibility for such a ship by a number of countries! So, I gave a couple of examples! With Australia ordering new Aegis Destroyers which are many years off and leaving a considerable gap until they reach service. Tawian on the other hand wanted Aegis Destroyers from the start. But the US turned them down and forced them to except the Kidd Class DDG without Aegis. So, I don’t know what your problem is? I never stated anything of the sort and clearly am not SPREADING LIES, RUMORS, OR DISINFORMATION!
PERSONALLY, YOUR COMMENTS ARE INSULTING AND HAVE NO PLACE IN THIS DISCUSSION!!! GET A LIFE:p

And where EXACTLY in this article that you linked to does it discuss ship transfers?
The idea of transferring Aegis cruisers to the RAN was discussed and rejected more than a decade ago.
I was involved in the project from the Australian side and the RAN rejected them on the basis of the structural damage that the flight 1s had suffered forward (fixed in the VLS ships).
The official reason was manpower, but the true reason is the same reason that Taiwan also rejected them in favour of the Kidds.
If you are going to try and start spreading lies, rumours and disinformation, at least try and find something believable.

I dont really have an issue with this, the Forrestal’s are now getting very old indeed and probably getting beyond the point of being able to be economically reactivated if required. Correct me if I am wrong but the Aegis ships being scrapped are the non-VLS Tico’s, not massively versatile and they dont really fit in with the rest of the fleets now. There required compliment and maintenance costs probably makes them impractical for export.
Yes, I believe the three Ticonderoga are all early non-VLS (Mk 41) Ships. Yet, compared to later VLS Aegis Cruisers. There main short coming is they can’t ripple fire a large numbers of Standard SM-2’s all at one time nor fire the SM-3 at all. Yet, for any likely customer that would hardly be issue! Tawian for example would love to add a couple Aegis Cruisers to its former USS Kidd Class DDG’s. Which, are very similar except for the Aegis Radar of course. Remember when Tawian took the Kidd Class they really wanted a Aegis Destroyer and/or Cruiser. Regardless, you would think the USN would hold on to such capable platforms for at least the next few years……:(

The other issue with the Tico’s is hog backing on many of them, so their are issues/questions of structural integrity of the vessels.
Guys you’ve got to remember the newest conventional carrier, the Kitty Hawk, was launched in 1960; the only ship in commission longer in the USN is the frigate USS Constitution.
From what I’ve read, most of these ships would only be useful as AFOBs, and even then, from a time, labor availability standpoint, it would probably make more sense to go the modified containership route for that for most of these mothballed carriers.
Now if the Russians don’t deliver to India, the rumor floating about of the IN looking at making a bid on the Kitty Hawk LINK might not be that far out.
