Until such time the USN is threatened by a major power launching a saturation attack, then………….
Aka Tom Clancey’s Red Storm Rising (my favourite book).

(you only need to use the reloading crane at sea, not when reloading in port, and basically the missiles just aren’t being replenished at sea).
In peace time it is hardly surprising I guess. And even in conflict, ala Iraq last year, how many SM-2s were fired in anger from USN vessels? None, as far as I recall. Until such time the USN is threatened by a major power launching a saturation attack, then………….

Any idea what it is?
That’s the reloading crane, that’s why the missile capacities of the VLS groups on the Tico’s are only 61 missiles, because those cranes take up three cells. I believe they have started deleting the crane from more recent Arleigh Burkes (increasing their missile capacity to 32 + 64 from 29 + 61), but I can’t remember if they’re going to remove them from ships already in service (I don’t think so, but they might from some). Basically, the reloading cranes are never used which is why they’re being deleted (you only need to use the reloading crane at sea, not when reloading in port, and basically the missiles just aren’t being replenished at sea).

Interesting shots, in the last pic there is a door like hatch (hope you don’t mind but I painted a circle on the pic with the area in question). Any idea what it is?

Great shots! One of the younger TICOs, at just 13 years old in service.
Her Baseline 3 sisters:
USS Princeton (CG 59)
USS Normandy (CG 60)
USS Monterey (CG 61)
USS Chancellorsville (CG 62)
USS Cowpens (CG 63)
The Baseline 3 mods:
Baseline 3 includes the AN/SPY-1B radar and AN/UYQ-21 consoles. The lighter SPY-1B radar, with improved radiating characteristics, was substituted for SPY-1A, and new computers (UYK-43 and UYK-44 in place of UYK-7) are employed. CG 59 was the Navy’s first cruiser equipped with the AN/SPY-1B radar system, which provided a significant improvement in the detection capabilities of the AEGIS Weapons System. This radar system incorporates significant advances over earlier radars, particularly in its resistance to enemy Electronic Countermeasures (ECM). With the SPY-1B radar and the ship’s MK 99 Fire Control System, the ship can guide its Standard Missile to intercept hostile aircraft and missiles at extended ranges. In 1996, CG 61 became the first of this group to be upgraded with the SPY-1D(V) radar and received a combat system upgrade including all-new combat system computers, consoles, and displays. The upgrade will permit future installation of such planned upgrades as Cooperative Engagement Capability, Theater Ballistic Missile Defense capability, and new versions of the Standard missile.
