UTA 772: the forgotten flight

You know about the Lockerbie tragedy.

But do you know about a similar tragedy that affected the passengers aboard UTA flight 772?

This DC-10 flight was tragically brought down over the Sahara desert on the 19th September 1989, with the loss of all souls aboard. The flight was on its way to Paris, having departed Brazzaville earlier that day.

It is believed once again, as with the Lockerbie tragedy, that Colonel Gaddafi of Libya was directly responsible for what occured.

It seems that France and Lybia are close to an agreement which would allow the lift of the sanctions against Lybia at the UN council.

A new resolution to lift this sanction will be proposed by the UK and the US after the agreement on the PanAm disaster.

I remember both incidents, but obviously Lockerbie more so as it’s close to home. Some of my (future) colleagues were despatched to the scene from a nearby outside broadcast in Dumfries to shoot news reports and were some of the first on scene. Their stories of what they witnessed are not at all pleasant. Some had to give up and go home quite quickly. 🙁

The last time I passed through Lockerbie was around the tenth anniversary in 1998. I drove near Tundergarth farm where the famous shot of the impacted nose section was taken. This was an eerie place to say the least, hairs standing up on the back of the neck kind of stuff. It was also the first year the town decided to put on it’s Christmas lights since the incident.

Just think if it did have some yanks on board… they would of invaded the whole country and told the world it was for justice.

Yes, I loosely knew the captain. Terrible occurance that I frequently remember when I’m overflying the Sahara.

I didn’t know about this one until today. The French will not back the lifting on sancations until they get the same settlemnt as the Lockerbie people. Still no Americans dies in the UTA crash so it did not make the headlines.
Aaahh UTA,excellent airline, nice scheme, and one of the shortest lived 747’s ever(burned out at CDG after a few weeks service I think?)
