For those interested in design details of the V2 some photos taken in the restoration workshop of the Australian War Memorial which has the remains of two V2’s, the most complete being currently disassembled for preservation works. Not many chances to look inside an original V2

Some fantastic images there Powerandpassion Farlamairframes.
It always amazes me with so much engineering and attention to detail (colored piping etc) that these were just intended to be blown up at the end of there journey, mind boggling.

P&P I have a small reminder on the wall behind my desk – the remains of one of the steering fins from the V2 fin.
In addition to the graphite in the main exhaust to steer the rocket, on each of the fins there were these flying control fins. They are easy to see by the bulge in the fins where the chain drive went down to a sprocket that was attached to the splined shaft.
This one was launched from Holland at 11 p.m. on Christmas Eve but landed in parkland in North London and this piece was blown off.
The green paint is original.

Business end. Certainly delivered it’s share of terror and tragedy. 75 years ago taking these photos and sharing them would get you turned into soap. The effort of the Polish Underground to smuggle V2 information and remains to the UK is an extraordinary story, as much as the V2 was a remarkable technical achievement.
