Something has to be done here.
Despite 76 letters in support and just one against ( I wonder if the bloke with the polo ponies who moved in next to the airfield and quickly became chair of the Turweston Action Group was anything to do with that one??) Planning consent was refused for Sept. and Oct. 04 and five 05 VAC fly-ins.
Aylesbury Vale DC cited ‘significant increase in aircraft movements over extended hours and thus disturbance to local residents’ in refusing consent.
So there’s democracy at work…
What about the days we can’t fly when the weather is cr@p and don’t reach the movements ‘quota’??
Last take off at 6.00pm on Sat and 4.00pm on Sun is already draconian. Couple this with Turdy’s Heathrow-type 3 mile circuit at 1200ft and dog-legged approach and it is surely enough restriction already. Not so it seems…
Seems like the local objectors ought to be rewarded with an industral estate (or a car factory?!) and heavy lorries thundering past their doors at all hours.
I bet the cars and bikes at Silverstone most weekends make more noise…
David Owen, all round good guy owner of Turdy is lodging an appeal.
Lets see how it develops.
Grrrrrrrrrrr!

Regarding the local council, its often a good idea to invite mayors, etc. to any events, this allows a little one on one time for lobbying etc. Also demonstrates what you or the airfield is about. If you can demonstrate involvement/employment with local community groups, industry and businesses it can help. Especially if your airfield can be included in the district plan as a resource. i.e. asset as an airfield.

…i grew up … the odd chipmunk … the most excitement i have is mowing the lawn …
LL:
* I didn’t grow up; you’ve got one up on me
* Chipmunks are never “odd”; always “even”.
* With regards to lawn mowing – see post #3. Y11F: I think we have the culprit to your headaches amongst us!

hi all
i grew up next to Skegness airfield and it was brilliant 😎 😎 plenty of planes to watch every day the odd chipmunk of the bbmf calling in every now and again the odd flyin with movements from dusk to dawn 😉 . Sometimes an occasional display of aerobatics (most weekends) plus the fun of watching student pilots doing their first landing even watched one land upside down once 🙁 although all occupants survived.
Then one day the place closed down half the airfield was bought by Butlins the other half turned to farming land. 🙁 🙁
All i had left then was tornadoes flying over on approach to Conningsby but even they got bored and moved to Scotland 🙁 😡
Now this area is so dull that the most excitement i have is mowing the lawn and dreaming of times past. 🙁 🙁 🙁
Does anyone remember Skegness aerodrome?

I can make a good point from time to time, you just have to pull it out of all the rest of the rubbish I normally post….
By: Chipmunk Carol - 11th October 2004 at 22:56
Hmm. That is an exceptionally good point, Y11F.

Can you imagine just how many meetings the local authorities would need to have just to be able to understand what an airfield is let alone how to tell anyone where they are located, most of the staff will have retired before they got to make a decission on the right strategy to use.

I think people who complain about aeroplanes flying over their houses should not be allowed to fly on any type of aircraft. That would really mess up their holidays.
They do not realise that if you remove the light aircraft, you will have nobody training to be airline pilots. Then there would be a pilot shortage which would really mess up the world.
The problem is that people who are not aviators are very unlikely to know that they are moving to an area where aeroplanes will fly over their house. Estate Agents will never tell them. I think the local authorities should have the responsibility to tell people when they do their pre-purchase surveys.
Maybe all we can do is lobby our MPs – which we can all do NOW in seconds. See this website . Don’t get aggressive; just tell them that the local authorities have a responsibility to inform purchasers of the environment into which they are moving.

When it comes to aviation, we need more Yimby’s|
By: scrooge - 11th October 2004 at 21:53
yep, they’re everywhere. i’ve dealt with a couple, can be bennificial when they get wound up and start threatening people and property. A quick phone call to the police, who explain the consequences of threats about personal injury and sabotage, and then they go away (for a while at least). Also said incident gets recorded… quite useful later on if they try again.

It happens in rural Norfolk as well! There are a couple of individuals who sold their £450k tool shed in London and moved here to buy a farm for the same money…not to use as a farm, but to impress their mates!! Came up over the weekend when our favorite base does not fly, then immediately went on the rant the first Monday after moving in, when to their horror aeroplanes began to take off and land……naughty things! Mind you they have probably complained about the ****’s crowing, cows mooing, the smell and anything else that is alien to a numpty who knows diddly squat about the real countyside let alone the fact they have bought a property close to an operational RAF base!
As for the person who votes himself onto every action group in a village, take heart! We had someone do the same here; simply to add more weight to his private vendeta against the same base. A letterhead with Councillor Billy B***o+ks is far more intimidating that Mr BB…or so he thought. Initially the locals who had been born and bred in this particular village let him rant and rave, but once they found out the true reason for voting himself onto every committee in the local community, they turned on him and pointed out that he was causing ill feeling between the village and the said base, who’s relationship in the past had been excellent. He was duly dumped, and as the locals say, ‘sent away’, ignored by all and told to sling his hook. All’s well that ends well; he has moved away, no doubt to do the same somewhere else, and the village is back to wholeheartedly supporting what has been happening for the past 65 years.

I live very close to the approach for Edinburgh airport- and I love it. There’s also a major A class road nearby and the noise from that is much more intrusive.
By: Andrew-O - 11th October 2004 at 20:23
This is a real shame.
I live in Syresham, a village next to Turweston, and get overflown by aircraft using the airfield. Compared to the noise of practice days at Silverstone, it’s nothing.
Can someone PM me with details of who I have to write to about this and I’ll say my piece ?

Reminds me of the time when Tom Wheatcroft was trying to reopen Donnington Park race circuit.
The principal objector turned out to be the same one who had lead the campaign against Thruxton! They are about 200 miles apart.
Unfortunately for him (but not for Donnington) the same barrister represented both circuits. The objection was thrown out.
I will say (as happened in Donningtons case) A letter writing campaign by pilots who have used the airfield pointing out the money that it generates in the local area can and will sway councils. Nothing sways opinions like money. 🙂

Whereabouts are you Snaps, we’ll keep a lookout for you waving at us!!!!

I’d pay extra to live next to an active airfield!!! Sadly the NIMBYs it seems are always the ones listened to!
By: Snaps - 11th October 2004 at 16:50
Do you reckon the council would use some of their budget for issuing 6 pairs of industrial ear defenders or earplugs?
Sorry it was said it jest but honestly! It annoys me when people complain about being under a flight path etc – it was already there before you decided to buy your property so tough luck!
We love it where we are as we get one or two aircraft fly over ranging from the civil stuff to “Janie”, “Fools Rush In”, and a lot of Blackbarn Aviation Stearmans. Not so keen on the helicopters from WTM though!

Snaps
