Valkyrie

Some footage of the Tom Cruise movie “Valkyrie”, about the July Plot to assassinate Hitler, on the Empire film forum.

Valkyrie footage

Lots of clips of warbirds in there, such as Ju.52s and Me109s (Spitfire Ltd’s Buchon and EADS’s Bf109G-6).

I’m no big fan of The Cruise, but I’m actually looking forward to seeing this.

Rommel was shot up by a flight of Spitfires from 350 (Belgian) Squadron. his staff car overturned and broke his back. He was under arrest at the time.

Its a long time since I have seen the Desert Fox, was that film accurate?

No, Rommel was actually German, not British.

No, he’s not.

Rommel was shot up after D-Day, and I don’t think he was any condition to be a part of any plot.

BTW: One of the Discovery Channels over here has been showing a UK series called “Hitler’s Bodyguards”.

There was one episode about his aircraft use and a unsucessful plot to bomb his Fw 200. The bomb was in a bag that was placed in the unheated baggage hold and it was so cold the plastic explosives would not work. His personal pilot survived the war and was held by the Russians until 1955.

There were about 40 attempts on Adolf’s life…some resulting in fatalities…but the details of most aren’t as well known as the famous one portrayed in the film.

It also went into some details about the final flights in-out of Berlin…the new head of the Luftwaffe flew to Gatow in a 2 seat Fw 190 and switch to a Storch with Hanna Reisch (sp?) for a last trip to the bunker to see Adolf..

Fascinating stuff…

is this movie any good? Why the hell has Rommell been renamed Von Staufenberg?

Claus von Staufenberg was the key character in the plot to kill Hitler, having said that it was no secret that Rommel had an intense dislike for Hitler.

109`s were a bit fleeting (which ones are they ? ).

D-FMBB and G-BWUE. You have to be really eagle-eyed to spot which is which, though, in the fly-by shots.

Excellent film with no unessery action/hero scenes. Well worth seeing in my opinion.

P40 scenes were great, beatifully filmed, 109`s were a bit fleeting (which ones are they ? ).

Lots of JU52 scenes, no Condors though

edit – You kind of know whats going to happen

After looking at the pictures on the Valkyrie film website can somebody explain why the aircraft painted as the Red Barons Triplane in pictures 1, 17 and 19 quite clearly has only two wings not three?

His resemblance to Herr Stauffenberg is actually quite remarkable…especially with that somber look. 🙂 …I guess a must-see.
