Looking at the following image comparison of the various Meko A200 class ships, I was struck by the oddness of the South African antennae arrangement, particularly the second pyramid style mast. Does anybody know why it is so different from comparative ships and what the various antennaes are for?

Hi,
and excellent work on the drawings, McConrads….. Although it appears the SAN is only installing two per ship at the moment, plans call for each ship to receive four Sea Rogues in total.
glad you like them. Any information on where those guns will be placed, on the bridge wings or aft?
BTW: that´s a nice contrast: http://www.alide.com.br/artigos/atlasurVI/imagem/atlasur_%20203.jpg

Thanks for the replies (and excellent work on the drawings, McConrads). Sorry I haven’t been able to reply earlier, but I’ve been laid low with a rather severe case of the flu.
Wilhelm, the radar element for the optronic tracker refers to the Reutech Radar Systems RTS 6400, of which each ship as two. I actually hadn’t known that the radar elements weren’t already installed, but nevertheless the radar is an X-band monopulse radar with 60km range.
The only items on the upgrade list which will change the ship’s profile in any way are the Rogue weapons platforms. Although it appears the SAN is only installing two per ship at the moment, plans call for each ship to receive four Sea Rogues in total.

Below is a link to a high quality image of the mast.

Also, news of a radar upgrade or fitment that does not appear in the photo above.
According to Jane’s, the SAN has begun implementing elements of a planned upgrade path, with all four Valour class frigates receiving the radar element for the optronic tracker, a second forward-looking infrared sensor for both trackers, a laser-warning system, a small taskforce commander operations room and two 12.7 mm Rogue remotely operated close-in weapons.
I wonder how this will affect her profile, if at all? Taken from the link below, which includes info on the Rogue system.

Almost all of the electronics on the Valour class are of South African origin. Perhaps this has to do with the difference?

well since it is the only version actually build I wouldn´t consider it strange by itself. Besides if you look at other current designs you´ll note that some of them have such a “third” (which is the second mast on the Valor only because it doesn´t carry a long range radar) mast as well: Horizon, Daring, F124 etc.
Glad you like the drawing btw:-))
