Dear Forumites,
I have been investigating VF309 Vampire F.1 ,and i went to Culmhead to speak to the farmer ,a eyewitness, this aircraft was from Merryfield, and had crashed in 1952 , . this aircraft IS in Air Britain series, “Broken Wings”
whilst talking he told me , |”what about the other one” to which I replied, ah you mean XG625 Venom which come down in 1958 nearby . He said, No, this was another, a Vampire/venom, single seater , which he saw on fire, that was on fire, and he saw the pilot in his parachute land in the field they were working, the Vampire carried on decending quite rapidly black smoke pouring from its rear, just beyond the trees, into a field just above Otterford Church ,
in the summer of 1953,
He also said he had a chat with the young pilot, who was a Flt Lt Rippon,
who said the cockpit had filled with smoke and he had to bale out, catching his shoulder on the aircraft as he tumbled out, . the pilot was worried as he floated down that the aircraft was going to crash into the church , thankfully it didnt. he was from Merryfield, my guess would be 208 AFS
I have been through the air britains and the closest one i can find, is a Vampire 8.9.53. VV564, but this is confusing as it says crashed 5.5 miles from tavistock/Somerset… I thought Tavistock.. was in Devon.. but its the only one ,and its a long shot , that is the same sqn, and ties in with being abandoned, and fire in the air,??
can ANYONE shed some light on this baffling mystery Please
