Picked the new cockpit project up at the weekend!

Thanks to dcollins103 for helping with loading up, and Anon who drove the 470 mile trip in his van and using his trailer ๐Ÿ™‚ Now the fun task of unpacking all the items and working out what is what begins……

Looks like an interesting project. Somewhat mirroring Davids hornet project. Please keep us posted with updates.

Christ on a bike! You’ve got one hell of a job on your hands there John, I wish you all the best with it. Do you have the forward nose section squirelled away somewhere or are you going to have to re-construct it yourself??

Nice one Jon. Looks like lots of work to be getting on with but what a fantastic base to start from. That windscreen is a superb piece too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Once I have finished sifting through the boxes of parts that came with it, and have got myself a bit more organised will post some more pictures. There is no denying a lot of work is ahead, but the potential is there.

As for taking it to Cockpitfest – in short no. We (North West Aviation Consortium as someone has jokingly dubbed us :P) are planning for the event at the moment and we have run out of vehicles to tow with! That said depending on were things are up to I MAY try and get some part of it over. In the meantime you will just have to make do with the Sea Hawk which has taken up my trailer allocation ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes indeed…. 5 years ago, there was’nt a Hornet cockpit in existence! ๐Ÿ˜€

That’s been done from less

I’m feeling sad its gone already, but its gone to a very good home.

And in the age old tradition on this site, here is the parts shopping list v1.0 in particular order –

Complete control column
Canopy ejection rails
Armour plate, LHS nose below windscreen
Top part of nose cone
LHS gun spout fairing/panel (I do have one but is rather mangled having come from a crashed plane – see attached picture)
L/H top ammo door
R/H top ammo door

Any leads etc on the above parts (or any Vampire single seat parts for that matter) will, as always, be greatly appreciated.

๐Ÿ˜€ It seemed politer than the โ€˜North-West Ghettoโ€™ or โ€˜North-West Enclaveโ€™ phrase that a well-known editor once coined!!

I found some bits of control column today, but not a complete one yet!

Jon, are you aware of the DH spares stock in Bridgend, S.Wales, most of it is accounted for and being recovered but there are other bits kicking about, I saw a pallet load of gundoors there for example, and something rather tasty – but that would be the lazy way to restore your Vamp!

I must get to the bottom of what is going on there – I shall have to schedule another visit – and yes, there are control columns there!

It’s not the control columns I’m thinking of in Jons case!
It is a right pickle down there that’s for sure, I think it’s a case of feelings on the day.

Lazy way

If the item that would allow the FB-5 to be restored the “lazy” way is the item I am thinking of, it wouldn’t be the lazy option at all but the incorporation of a major original part which would end up as a first-class, as-new project of a historic machine.

I’d say it would be an excellent idea which would save a huge amount of (non-original and, inevitably compromised) work. It would also be the perfect home for such an item.

We’re talking about a single-seat pod aren’t we?:o

Anon.
