Vampire Flies!

After being put on rest since 1992….this month a IAF Vampire flew for a few journalists and historical aviation analysist. It is said possibly all Vampires with IAF at present are air worthy. Quite impressive.

RE: Vampire Flies!

I am not sure Snoopy…because i have heard one of HAL Ajeets will also take to the skies soon. IAF if having the International Air Display might be planning to bring on some of the classic fleet in. I will get back to this as soon aspossible with details.

RE: Vampire Flies!

Whee!! Marvellous news, Kabir. Please don’t forget to come back with the pics, when your friends pass them to you!

Would you know if the occasion when this Vampire flew was laid on as some kind of substitute for the international air display that the Indian Air Force was planning to host (following the Indian Navy’s presumed PR success in hosting the International Fleet Review in Bombay, some months ago), which I understand was cancelled at short notice because of 9-11 and Operation Enduring Freedom? Did the IAF have any plans to fly any of its Vintage Flight at that display?

Look forward to seeing the pics, when you have them. Regards,

Snoopy

RE: Vampire Flies!

Wow, Wonderful news. It must be the Vampire with the IAF’s Vintage flight. True it had spent its time on the ground for years. I still remember its last public flight in 1989, it flew a formation with the IAF’s sole flyable spit (which incidentaly has not taken to air in years -Status unknown).

Kabir, did you get a chance to view it?

RE: Vampire Flies!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-12-01 AT 03:58 PM (GMT)]Not a chance…..the Vampire is not being brought back into service. It was flown because of some reporters from USA, Germany and France had come to make a documentry on the Classic jets with the IAF. Although it was a great site to see….this bird with the Gnat were the plus points in the 1971 war with Pakistan. Well i am mainly into Commercial Aviation…but also am very interested in classic aircrafts. Here is a pic of the Gnat taken at Ambala AFB in Northern India in 1966.

RE: Vampire Flies!

Hi Kabir
Nice to hear that we in the UK are not the only ones into classic jets
🙂
What I am not clear about is whether this Vampire or others are part of a memorial flight or whether they are being reintroduced to active service.Any chance you could clear this point up a bit?
Ragerds,
Ant
