Vampire (?) In Ferndown, Dorset c.1973

I seem to remember that, when I was a small person, my school had an ATC unit with an small engine-less British twin-boomed jet aircraft, presumably a Vampire.

The school, then called Gorsemoor but now Ferndown Middle School still has an ATC unit, 2358 (Ferndown) Squadron.

I was there September to November 1973.

Does anybody know what became of the aircraft?

… and my wife’s uncle Tom (really) is a chef in the canteen at LATCC now!

Dad has long since retired from ‘B’ watch, however.

So you were one of the big ‘orrible kids…

I went there when I was nine from Parley Cross and left for London in the November (my Dad moved from Hurn to LATCC).

Ray

We moved to Ferndown from Ringwood in 1973 when I was 11 so wasn’t there long before going to Ferndown Upper.

In the W+R book XH318 is just listed as ‘Southampton area’ No address or name so I’ve no idea.

Hi Spey,

Small world! What year were you in in 73?

Glad to here that XH318 may still exist. I wonder if it is private private or if its accessible at times?

Cheers

Ferndown Vampire

Ray and all

Good to see some pictures of XH318 as I too was at Gorsemoor School in 1973. I never took a picture myself all those years ago as I didn’t have a camera. XH318 is still listed in the current W+R as being in the Southampton area with a collector who has two Vampires and a Gannet.

The reference to being preserved ‘Scholing’ could be a mispelling for Sholing which is a district of Southampton.

Any more information would be very welcome.

Yes – Vampire T11 XH318.
Wrecks and Relics 4th edition says 2358Sqn ATC keep it at the school.
The majority of it moved to 424Sqn ATC at Southampton by 1/1977, but seems to have died around 1983 (oh for a full W&R registration index…) without trace.

Flood.
