Vampire Survivors

Hi All,

I’m hoping that some one might have a complete list of all Vampires that are still left.

I’ve already check Warbirds Registery and while its alright its not complete what I’m trying to track down is the Vampire(s) that David Tallichet had. I know he had at least one but I’ve been lead to understand that he might have had up to 6 other airframes.

Thanks

Thanks David,

I am in touch with one of the owners of the aircraft, to see if I can acquire one for parts or a project. It would be sad to see them end their days like this.

Bruce: In February 2013, the last four of Don Wood’s Venoms (WR360/G-DHSS, WR410/G-DHUU, VV612/G-VENI and J-1573/G-VICI) were dismantled and transferred to the Atlantic Air Venture Museum at Shannon. Their civilian registrations being cancelled on 5 March 2013.

Alan Allen provided me with an update a little while ago: G-VICI (camouflaged, ex-HB-RVB), G-DHTT (red, β€˜20 – 23 August’ on nose), G-DHSS (white) and G-VENI (silver) noted in store (fuselage pods) at Portlartington, Co.Laois, in Aug 2013; WR410 on display at Atlantic Air Venture Museum at Shannon)

I hope that this helps?

No, they are in a yard somewhere in Ireland. Trying to find out more at the moment.

The Venoms went to Ireland and are in external store. I don’t see a good future for them.

I thought they were sold for parts etc? Did they all end up in Shannon?

Bournemouth Vampires went to South Africa.

The Venoms went to Ireland and are in external store. I don’t see a good future for them.

Which was the Swinderby Vampire?

Tom,

Very interesting to hear – I would be most interested to see pictures of the aircraft. I will certainly have the instrumentation you need, when you are ready.

Keep us posted!

Kind regards

TG372

Bruce

Vampire I… TG372(RAF) Canada Aviation Museum (Ottawa)

The Alberta Aviation Museum (Edmonton Alberta Canada) is actively pursuing the Canadian National Aviation Museum to acquire this aircraft.

WEE (Winter Evaluation Establishment) was set up on our airport and for a time operated from the Double wide Double long BCATP hanager that now housed our museum.

I will see if we have the stills (BW) of its service scanned and if we do I will post them for you.

We have collected a substantial amount of data on the aircraft
both from former military sources and the airport kids that took pictures of it and made notes (the kids are all now in their late 70’s and 80’s).

I recently went over the aircraft (April) and it is (except for the engine) complete and well within the ability to restore to original.

It is the first of the Canadian Jet Fighters and operated here in Edmonton, Alberta.

We are working hard to bring this Vampire home and put it back to its former glory.

I dont think there is an accurate figure, but I guess at around twenty in total.

They are slowly on the decline, although there may be some of the ex Source ones to fly again in due course.

N6885D and VT858

In 2006 there was a thread

http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=33007

on which I asked about a Vampire F3 N6885D, ex 17062, which I saw at Orange County on the dump, 2 December 1972, accompanied by N6883D (17071) We know about ’83D, but does anyone know where ’85D ended up? According to that thread it went to Mojave after SNA.

Also, what happened to the F3 VT858 that was at Marshalls, Cambridge for a number of years? I last saw it in dismantled state there on 17 September 1959.

Just had some more info on this Iraqi survivor, apparently it was complete and displayed along with other jets at this airfield and survived the bombing which occured during GWII.
It was then cleared by the US forces who now run the place at which point the Dove was dropped onto it….

Would be nice to retreive before its made even worse however with the ‘ know the cost of everything / value of nothing’ mentality endemic in the MOD I think the chances of a free ride back to the UK in the back of an otherwise lightly loaded transport is slim…..

Would there be space in a C17 to bring it back?

Large Bump !

Excuse the thread resurrection ( but it was started this year) but I’ve just been sent some of an ex Iraqi Vampire now sadly on the dump at Habbaniya,Iraq.
I’m no good at Arabic so can anyone decifer the serial painted on the side.

Update – the serial is 391, which would make it the last of the 12 Vampire FB52’s delivered to the Air Force in Nov 1955.

The pod is badly smashed but otherwise complete, would be nice to bring it home and it could mate up with DH103’s pod and make a complete one!

Notice also the very trashed remains of a Dove behind it.

Hope its of interest.

Bad news I am afraid, I went back to the base at Comox this morning and was told that the Vampire is being stored in a restricted area ( I guess anywhere inside is restricted on an active base ).
But Mike who is in charge of the Spitfire rebuild project said he will email me some photos when he can. So I will post those when I receive them and will post the ones of the Vampire in the Calgary museum this weekend when I get home.

I am out in Comox, B.C. Canada. at the moment looking at the Y2K mark nine spitfire’s progress.
They have a Mark III here and I believe there is a Mark III in the museum in Calgary. I have some photos of the Calgary one on my computer at home and can post them on the weekend when I get back home if you like.
Also I could photograph and gather some details on the one in Comox in the morning if you wish.

Rick

Please do so.
The one at Comox is: 17031 / N41J (formerly VP720)
The Calgarly one is 17069 / CF-RLK (formerly VP769)

Would love to see pictures of these.
