Film star of the 40s-50s, Van Johnson passed away today at the age of 92.
He starred in dramas, musicals, comedies and several war films…but FlyPast readers will know him best from starring in 30 seconds Over Tokyo and A Guy Named Joe, both with Spencer Tracey.

I saw most of it last night on Turner Classic Movies (TCM).
Later, as it always does this time of year, TCM aired a film of brief shots of movie people who passed away during the year, including the supporting actors and those who worked behind the camera. Among those whose obits I had missed:
Hazel Court
Nina Foch
Lois Nettleton
Michael Pate
All professionals who always turned in a solid job.

One of the movie networks had several of his films on last night.
I saw most of A Guy Named Joe…(never have seen it in one sitting)
and was impressed by the planes…
B-25s, razorback Mustangs as Bf-109s, Vultee BT-13s at Luke Field, a Lockheed Electra transport, C-47, early P-38s, Martin B-26s as Japanese bombers…sure there were some models…and yes, I know the German’s didn’t have an operational carrier, but for a war film made while the war was on
(1943) there were a lot of nice planes to see.
And both Johnson and Tracey were great.

I’d say by the lack of response most people on this forum are far too young to remember him

A real Hollywood actor from the old school..the Nancy boys of today could learn a lot from him
