Vanguard taxi runs

For those that were interested, the Vanguard will make its final taxi runs up and down the runway at Brooklands Museum for the last time this coming Saturday, 29th May. Think it’s planned for about 12.00pm.

None of the airliners, except the Vanguard can run its engines.. The Demoiselle and Bleriot have their engines run some events, and the Sopwith Camel is capable of running, but hasn’t for a couple of years now.

Are any of the other aircraft at the museum maintained in running condition? The Viscount?

Before the taxi a couple of weeks ago, the last time the Vanguard was run was 13 December last year, but that was due to lack of a Ground Power Unit for the past few months. Usually, it was about once a month, maybe less in the winter. If they are to be run again, it won’t be run for a while now as the ground and surroundings need a lot of work done.

In order to keep the engines in running condition..how often did they do engine runs on the aircraft?…I know that turbines don’t like to be inactive for too long!

The image I posted above was taken in 1999, the photo below was taken during its final moment of glory. The Vanguard has now moved across the river Wey into the museum grounds.

The French Atlantique maritime patrol aircraft, the C160 Transall transport aircraft, and the Aeritalia Fiat G222T (Libya) are all Tyne powered and are still in front-line military service.

Tis sad to think that was her last live performance,,but maybe those RR Tynes will sing again…never say never…

Did the Vanguard and the Canadair CL-44 share the same engines? with maybe different power rating…and what other propliners used those engines?

Also there won’t be any runway anymore for her to be taxied on. Ground running her is still being discussed. As Steve said we’ll have to wait and see what happens once the aircraft have been moved.

Basically, the Vanguard has to be moved into the museum. The land that it is on now has been bought by Damlier-Chrysler, and the Vanguard, along with the VC10, will be moved into what is now the car park at the museum, first week in June. Due to close proximity of other aircraft, the surface it will be on and what is positioned behind it, it may result in no more engine runs, but will have to wait a couple of weeks to see how it all works out.

Why can’t they continue to taxi her? Is it parts? Money? the people in charge? or the Health and Safety executive???

I can’t see why she still can’t be at least ground run?

Paul.
