A Brazilian fellow from another forum seems to think that TAP and Air Canada may be involved in a rescue/takeover of Varig ?
.[/B][/I]

TAP showed interest early on in the process to find a buyer, but they decided not to bid, and have showed no fresh interest in the build up to todays auction, so unless they have kept very quiet then its unlikely. It would be difficult to keep it quiet because various agencies would need to approve the offer, so it couldn’t be kept under wraps.

I read on another forum somewhere that Varig Log are attempting to buy Varig. How ironic is that?!

A Brazilian fellow from another forum seems to think that TAP and Air Canada may be involved in a rescue/takeover of Varig ?

There is strong rumors that TAP and Air Canada placed a bid for buying VARIG yesterday. Maybe tomorrow the brazilian court will disclose the bidders ID. Thatยดs a great new to brazilians specially for me, a VARIG fan that also have been treated very well on TAP and Air Canada aircrafts.

Varig Lawyer Says New Bidder Offers $450 Mln Cash for Airline

June 13 (Bloomberg) — Varig, Brazil’s biggest international airline, said a second, unidentified bidder has offered $450 million for the assets of the bankrupt carrier, topping a previous bid by a group of the company’s employees.

Alvarez & Marsal Inc., Varig’s financial adviser, received a bid today from a company identified as a “Brazilian airline industry investor,” Varig lawyer Rick Antonoff said at a hearing today in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York. The new bidder has offered $450 million cash and is prepared to deposit $75 million in a Varig account today, Antonoff said.

The offer comes a day before Brazilian Bankruptcy Judge Luiz Roberto Ayoub is scheduled to rule on the proposed sale of Varig to NV Participacoes, a company controlled by a group of pilots and flight attendants. Ayoub has said he would approve the sale provided NV Participacoes increases the cash in its bid to $346 million from $125 million.

“A new investor is interested in acquiring the company,” Antonoff said.

The U.S. case is In re: Viacao Aerea Rio-Grandense, 05- 14400, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York.

Coincidence, I promise. I’m not reading your mind. LOL

I suspect the Brazillian fans will have their tickets honoured by other Star Alliance airlines.

Ironically Sandy, I was just thinking the other day of starting a Varig thread, in my guess wondering what was going on with them, rather than giving an update, as you have done. Wow. It’s amazing how they can park so many planes in such a small space as they have done according to those photos. Interestingly enough, all their long-haul flights are still listed on the Star-Alliance timetable, updated on July 8th, although to the best of my knowledge, they stopped long-haul services a good month ago. Any idea how all the Brazilians that flew Varig to Germany for the World Cup returned home?

PP-VMU I guess you mean, and that flies for Varig LOG, which as the above articles clearly point out, is a totally separate company.

By all accounts, dead as the Dodo.

Almost all their fleet is leased, so if nothing is done fairly soon, the aircraft will be scattered around the globe.

Not quite dead. They are still operating a small number of domestic routes. The latest is that last week the proposed purchaser failed to meet a guarantee figure of $75million to show they could raise the funding to purchase the airline, the purchaser was an employee group, TGV.

So once again the bankruptcy judge has set a new date for the auction of the airline, with that being tomorrow, the 12th and VarigLog (formerly the cargo arm of varig ironically) have come forward as bidders, which the creditors are hgappy with, the purchase price is $500million, although they too will have to raise the $75million financial guarantee. There is an issue with Variglog pruchasing the airline because they are majority owned by a US company, which causes problems with regards to the fact that the law in Brazil sets 20% as the upper limit of foreign ownership of a passenger carrier. However the Brazilian CAA has confirmed they probably would let it be sold anyway.

In the meantime it is Variglog that are providing unsecured loans to Varig to keep operating their reduced schedules. I think there is another bidder, a steel company, offering $600m for the company, but at the end of the day I doubt they’d go with that because at least Variglog is an airline and is supporting varig.

We will see the results of the auction tomorrow I guess.
