You may have heard that there is a plan to install commemorative plaques in the home town of each person awarded the VC. There was a feature on our local news (west country) concerning Rex Warneford VC. Although he and his family lived near Exeter (I think) it seems there will be no plaque for him. This is because although British, he was born outside of the UK (in india). From the report on the news it seems this is the policy, if they weren’t born here, no plaque, whether your family home was here or not. I was wondering how many more of these brave people will miss out on this commemoration. Guy Gibson immediately spings to mind, being born in india as was Warneford. If it is correct I think it’s terrible that these men will not be remembered in their home town or city. Anyone think of other VC holders who will be ignored because of this decision?

Possibly so, Sgt Austin. I hadn’t read that.
In which case there is ample room for a good many more controversies, yet!

I thought they were starting with WW1 as it is the centenary next year but then extending the scheme to include all recipients in a few years time.

True enough.

The memorial slab scheme only applies to WW1 VC recipients.

David Lord. Grew up in Wrexham but born in Cork, although he does have a commemorative plaque in Wrexham St Giles (?) Church.

Major ‘Mick’ Mannock.
No definitive birthplace confirmed. Could be Brighton or Aldershot. Or could be India or Cork.
