Vedomosti: "Aeroflot chooses A350 over B787."

Translated from Dutch:

MOSCOQ – Aeroflot will place an order for 22 A350’s. This was reported by Russian newspaper Vedomosti. The official announcement of the order was posponed due to the recent aircrafh with the Armenian A320, last week in the black sea of the Russian coast.

The decision to pick the Airbus seems to be at least in part political. The Russian state holds the majority of the shares in Aeroflot.

Recent tensions between Russia and the United States would have lead to a preference for Airbus, various media sources are reporting. For instance, the US is keeping Russia from entering the World Trade Organisation. Moreover, vice president Dick Checey recently criticised Russia due to the limited democracy in Russia, and because of Russia has put pressure on neighbouring states dependant on Russian gas and oil.

The order is believed to be valued at roughly 3 billion Dollar. Earlier it was assumed that Aeroflot would choose the B787 because it would be available earlier. The B787 is expected to be available in 2008 whereas the A350 is not available till 2010. Airbus is currently studying possible chances to the A350 design, which may delay the introduction further still.

Why wouldnt they want to but Russian aircraft? Like IL-96?

Russian aircraft, or more accurately their engines, lack the efficiency that GE, PW, CFM and RR achieve.

They’re getting better, but not by enough or quickly enough

In comparison however it is far less efficient, and western models are considered “safer.” Only SAS are known to be looking (from a western point of view) at Russian designed/constructed aircraft.

I’ll believe it only when the paint hits the metal.

SU are swapping from side to side on a monthly basis, depending on how Putin feels at the start of each month.

Very Very odd, despite political differences, it was my understanding that Aeroflot favoured the economics of the B787 and that through a B787 order with Boeing they’ get their MD-11s which they are desperate for,
