Venom G-DHVM 'WR470' flies again.

Good news from a rather dull, grey Baginton!

After a couple of years permanently hangar-bound, our Venom took to the air last night in the capable hands of John Beattie. The test flight ran smoothly, and the Venom is now avalable for Airshows along with the other classic jets in the fleet. As you can see, the Venom retains the spectacular cartridge start system although it is planned to upgrade this to a more ‘user friendly’ alternative in the near future! Whilst the cartridge system is retained, and we have a good stack of cartridges left to use, the start proceedure on the ground adds a further dimension to a display.

We had planned to chase the Venom in the trusty photo-recon Pembroke (Tom got as far as cleaning the windows) but unfortunately by the time it was filled with the neccesary fuel etc.. the Venom screamed back in to land! The weather yesterday evening was not really up to the job anyway… but watch this space next time a suitable pilot and a sunny afternoon co-incide!

Ooooh – I remember the lineups of operational Swiss Dh-112’s during the late 70’s – approx 10 – 15 ships in a row, and all fired the starter cartridge at the same instant…. must have photos somewhere……

It’s good to see another twin-boomer in the air again !

First time I’ve seen a cartridge start in the flesh! Quite impressive it was too:

Its a real shame we didn’t make it up to get some airborne shots but at least the Pembroke has clean windows now

Andrew, WK163 should be on the display circuit next year. The jets don’t usually fly at the open days, the airport don’t like it believe it or not!
