The A.R.G. Forum post says the installation was to counter the bombing of bomber formations by higher-flying a/c. Was that a serious concern? Don’t recall hearing of that before.

It did replace a gun I guess, just not the Mid-Upper Turret. Perhaps they got confused or excited? What was it, a 30cal handheld at that hatch?

Interesting, never seen this before. The post on the Airfield Research Group forums states that the tubes were mounted in place of the mid-upper turret, but the image in the thread shows the Radio Compartment, looking aft (the manual gear/flaps handles on the bulkhead confirm this for me, as well as the shape of the roof hatch). It would also account for all the electrical bits…
Edit: We’re on the same page Zidante, I just hadn’t seen your post yet.

The text says that it replaced the upper turret but surely that installation is in the radio room?
(at least it appears to be with my eyesight and a mobile screen)

There seems quiet a lot of electric equipment on that facing bulkhead…

Typed ‘Boeing B17 rocket launcher’ into my search engine and 30 seconds later here’s the answer.
