Very Old Altimeter Question

I found this at a garage sale this weekend and was hoping someone might know which aircraft it may have been used in. The altimeter dates from the 1920’s or possibly the teens I am not sure which. It has the AD mark on the dial which I believe is for US Army Aviation but don’t know for sure, and it is clearly for an open cockpit aircraft. Oh yes it works splendidly! Many thanks for any help you can give!

Hello FB,

I searched around and was able to find 3 Piper J3s and the altimeters were all different from this one. They had an internal dial for the higher altitudes, and this altimeter stops at 19,000 feet. They all were white faced instruments though.

Cheers
Gary

I’ve seen similar units in the early Piper J3 panels, and the adjustment knob is in the right place for the J3C/L4A/B panel.

Later they had a “cub” motif added, before they got changed to the black faced version.
