Very stupid question about WW2 warships

Hi,

were WW2 ships like a Flower-Corvette camouflaged via paintbrush or airbrush?
How did they paint the hulls after all? Many workers with buckets of paint and brushes? I think the layers had to be quite thick, so I presume they painted them that way.

I don’t suppose too many ships are using Mountbatten pink….

Here are two examples. Canberra in the waters typical of the RAN operating areas, and Churchill in the North Atlantic.

For example the RAN use a green-tinged paint that blends in very well in tropical waters north of Australia and throughout South East Asia, whereas the dark grey of the USN stands out, designed as it is for Northern Atlantic and Pacific waters.

Huh ? I didn’t know that, I assumed that the oceans’s colors were roughly the same anywhere in the world… Thanks, you just teach me something. 🙂

The new paint is environmentally much friendlier, requires fewer coats, is longer lasting and some paints incorporate low-reflectivity in the visual spectrum.

In addition, some navies have developed paint colours that more accurately blend into the operating conditions which they most normally find themselves in. This is much easier for regional navies than for global navies such as the US.

For example the RAN use a green-tinged paint that blends in very well in tropical waters north of Australia and throughout South East Asia, whereas the dark grey of the USN stands out, designed as it is for Northern Atlantic and Pacific waters.

As long as we are talking paint on Warships. How far have modern paints come since WWII?

Old paint could indeed accumulate in multiple coats. It is reported of Leander-class frigate modernization that paint removal totaled as much as 80 coats and 45 tons.
Chances are that I will never again have anything to say about any post-WWII ship. For me, history comes to a close c1950.

How about the reverse……………how is the old paint removed? Clearly, you couldn’t just add layer after layer……..not at over 17 tons per Destroyer!

In the shipyard where i was working they used sandblasting. In places where they cannot use that method they used drills with tool for grinding.

They would give it to a rookie captain and watch as he trys to bring it into dock and scrape all the paint off it.:D

This remins me a joke about warships and paint:
While at sea, most ships get dirty quite easily, so it is well known about sailors that “Dirt+Paint = clan hull”. 😀

Here’s a WWII paint factoid: a British destroyer would enter service covered in 17.5 tons of paint.

“How much is a 30 cent Icecream?” Now that’s a classic or at MacDonalds they ask you if you whant fries with your meal deal.

Yes stupid questions are out there, but this is not one of them, it’s actually very good considering the current tech level where they pop the ship in and spray it all over in a week.

Oh…I must strenuously disagree. I have heard a host of stupid questions in my day. Not that this is one of them, but they’re out there, I assure you.

Yes like the girl who came into the shop in university. She had to walk past the lake to get to the shop and the shop was right in front of the lake. She says “hi, could you tell me where the lake is?” I’m standing there looking at her as if she has two heads, which probably would not have helped her. I just point out the window to the lake which is 30 foot away. She says “thanks” and leaves. Everyone in the shop just cracks up laughing and then we feel bad that this is the type of person that our university lets in!

There are no stupid questions, the only stupid question is the one you don’t ask. This place is a perfect place to come and learn.

Hand painted as far as I know. Primer coat of good old ‘red lead’ and a top coat of grey over it. Make and mends and away with the bosuns chair and all that!. Bloody glad I missed out on it! 😀
