Veteran & Vintage aircraft 1974 edition question

I can remember (in 1975/76) going through Leslie Hunt’s V&VA in search of surviving Grumman TBM/TBF Avengers. Among the ones listed (I think to remember) were some survivors in Japan. In the 1978 edition (which I have bought in the RAF Museum 2 decades ago), no Avengers are listed in Japan (anymore). As there are still claims that 3 Japanese Avengers are preserved, I wonder if anybody can check the locations listed in 1974. BW Roger

By the way, that’s negative thinking an Avenger in the Aviodrome or Soesterberg. It must be an Avenger in BOTH the Aviodrome and Soesterberg and a flying one at Gilze-Rijen( they all have Spitfires so what is keeping them from doing the deal) and one in front of my house (or in the garden).

I’ll go for an airworthy one at Lelystad please (killer version, never much liked those big radomes). That way we don’t have to lock it up in a museum and I’m guessing more people will get to see it compared to one based at Gilze-Rijen.

You can park the spares ship in your garden then Roger! 😀

Come on Cees. You know I always sign my letters with I.E.S.H. behind my name :diablo:

But apart from the above, it realy is a shame we don’t have one here. a Killer was burned in 1975, a Hunter 3W2 was exchanched for a Fokker S11 (now these are rare in Holland in 1976 ( 🙁 😡 )

Roger, Roger,

So you have a Spitfire too, if you want one in your garden. :diablo:

Wasn’t one ex-Dutch Avenger sold to the UK during the seventies? Doug Arnold or the Strathallan Collection ring some bells here. What happened to that one?

TBM’s Israel

…so it must be true. 😀 Was there any OTHER evidence?

The three TBM’s in Israel were all ex Ag aircraft as I recall.

I would be pretty sure this was one of them, photographed at Beersheba on 11 December 1989.

You have to do your homework James. The evidence was a half a page article on them by Stuart Howe, it was no advertisement. They could be bought for 10.000 usd all 3. I tried to buy one (for 3000 ) but I had to get them all 3. Apart from that no one in Holland was interested, and still isn’t, in the Avenger. Thet prefer to invest in plastic Spitfires more expensive than a TBM while as it was for me I should exchanche all Dutch Spitfires for half a TBM tailhook.

BW Roger

Careful Roger, 😮 😮

Go wash your mouth, you naughty boy. :p

Cees

p.s. I’m interested to see an Avenger in the Aviodrome or Soesterberg

Roger

I have a whole tailhook…..can we have our ‘Baby Bea’ back please 🙂

Dave

Fine with me Dave, but why don’t you want them all, that tailhook is at least worth 3 Spitfires, and when it is still in the original paint I include the plastic ones aswell. I am the promotor of a Spitfire free Holland (although I must admit that I might make an exception for that one that flew in that nice looking two green and yellow Luftwaffe markings during the war). So, make me president and you can all have them back. BW Roger

Guess that was one of his clever mistakes.

Totally off topic.
James, the sadly departed Mr Ravenscroft was 65 when he died.

Unless of course you’re referring to another John Peel that I don’t know. 🙂

Ta.

Never did like ‘for sale’ ads as ‘evidence’.

Anyone offered them to HP yet?

One was pictured by Stuart Howe in an article for the magazine. From memory one is at Hatzerim in U.S Navy colours, another in the museum storage compound and the last of the trio is reported as being under restoration to fly with a private owner.
One of the three is a rare ‘S’ model.

And what about the three Avengers that were for sale in Israel about 1985. It was reported on in FlyPast.

…so it must be true. 😀 Was there any OTHER evidence?

Thanks Dennis, I knew I saw it somewhere. But now the question is why these machines are not listed as survivors (anymore). I know the Dutch Navy burned a TBM in 1975 ! to practise their firebrigade, but I don’t think that all 3 Japanese ones were also scrapped/burned/who knows, but why weren’t they mentioned in 1978 anymore? Are they still “alive”?

BW Roger

BuNo 91195, according to Geoff Goodall’s new Warbirds Directory, is still on display at Tateyama AB. (anyone have pictures?) No further information about the other two though.

2nd edition of Bob Ogden’s book of Museums and Collections in Asia (published about 4/5 years ago I suppose ) doesn’t list any Avengers in Japan – just a couple of Trackers
