Victor Mahl – Sopwith engineer and pilot

Can anyone provide a bit of background for Victor Mahl prior to him joining Sopwith in 1914. His activities in 1914 through to his death from appendicitis in 1915 are reasonably well documented but I can find nothing earlier. Was he English? When was he born? What experience did he have prior to Sopwith? Its possible he was at Bristol with Pixton

Cheers

Thank you, yes I have most of his career clear now including Flight mentions. I now know Victor did indeed have a child, Eric Victor Basil Mahl, born in 1913, so under two years old when Victor died.
I have also found a brief record of his funeral in Chiswick in a local paper with names of some important attendees

Much of his career at Sopwith is included at appropriate dates in my “100 years ago” diary on our kingstonaviation.org website and updates over the next few weeks will cover his final work and funeral. David

Apologies if you’ve already looked but there are 33 hits on ‘Mahl’ between 1909 and 1915 in Flight magazine (http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/index.html). I hasten to add I’ve not read them.

Hi,
I am hoping some of you especially Annie are still following this thread.
I am creating a week by week diary of the history of the Sopwith Aviation Company through the Great War and am working on March/April 1915 when Victor Mahl died.
Annie says her husband is Victor’s Great grandson.
Does anybody know what offspring he had?
He/she/they must have been very young when he died he only married in 1912.
Hoping to get some extra information, I have photographs, the inquest report and a brief record of the funeral.
David
PS You can find my Sopwith Aviation diary at www.kingstonaviation.org and select “100 years ago”

Hi Annie,

Yes indeed, I would be very interested to hear how Victor first came to enter the aircraft industry. In the brief time he was active with Sopwith he certainly looked to be a rising star, a potentially brilliant career cut short.

Cheers

Victor Mahl

Not sure if you are still interested in the above mechanic of the Sopwith. I have been researching his family tree with my husband who is Victors Great Grandson so we have information re his parents etc.

Schneiderman.

He was born in London on the 28th october 1889.

He was the holder of Aviator’s Certificate no. 784 and he qualified at the Sopwith School Brooklands on 14th May 1914 in a Sopwith Biplane. If you PM me your email address I can send you the images of the photo he submitted for his certificate and the index card if you don’t laready have them.

Only brief mention of him in various Putnam’s but no background detail..the attached shot from the Sopwith volume.
