I would think the H&S crowd would not allow her to be powered up anymore..? Would be nice if a group could form up to look after her though..

Peter,
HSE would give a hoot about this. Look at their website. IWM may have a few things to say about it though.

XH648

If 648’s Hydraulic and other system were closed down why do the Victor XL231 XM715 why are still allowed to operate when surely their hydraulic systems are out of date????? Surely other aircraft come into that category?

Victor XH648 Repaint

I totally agree with all of you regarding 648 Roger Brooks and his wife and the team left in the early 1990’s after having had discussions with Chris Knapp on the way he wanted them to work with him in charge doing what he wanted us to do not on the Victor or Vulcan. Sorry but you dont even know what we were talking about my team at that time had a Vulcan Electrical Specialist (Ch/Tech, a Airframe Sergeant with Battle Damage Instructional Experience, Another Ex SNCO Airframe an Ch/Tech Victor Mk1 and 2 Crew Chief , three Civilian Mechanical Fitters, A Civillian Avionics Specialist and a Proffesional Drive. And 4 others all having been at Duxford for quite a few years. We were banned from running the Hydraulic and orther services as the sysytems paticularly Hydraulic were out of “Life” despite RAF Marham Hydraulic bay willing to service them for NOTHING. When it stared to pickle Chris Chippington asked us to paint it again this time in the open we declined after all it was the IWM and Chris Chippington in particular they made us spray it with MATT Varnish. The Victor does not have a main spar there are 3 spars and spar at the trailing edge of the wing No 4,Chris Knapp tried to have it scrapped in the MID 1990’s he was advised to forget it after Fellows and Members of the RAeS advised the museum that they were wrong Roger and Heather will not be returning to Duxford having been advised not to rejoin on their return from Yorkshire and XL231

IMHO she should be restored in her current configuration, as she represents both the bombing and the tanking role the Victor 1 carried out.

Edit: link to the latest news the Victor Assn. have on her

First the Lanc and now the Victor…. Me thinks Peter has found some new paint programme.:p

Gloss with matt coating is correct, we did the cowls on a Marchetti after it was painted to flat them

re;

Tanker, or Bomber she needs attention. Having never seen her pristine I would like to see her restored, preferably with steps so you can see into the cockpit.

Yes, how about removing all the flight refuelling gear and painting it in anti-flash white. It would look terrific.

There were some internal politics involved somewhere, and I believe Roger and his wife went off to devote themselves to another worthy aeroplane – I’m sure somebody will know where.

Their team painted the Victor quite a few years ago, and used a paint combination recommended by the IWM’s supplier at the time. I believe it was a gloss paint (for durability) which was then to be overpainted with a lacquer which would not only increase the protection but dull the finish to a more accurate matt. (I know nothing of these things – just trying to recall what I was told at the time!)

Unfortunately, there was a problem somewhere – the two coats quickly reacted with each other and started pickling off, leaving the untidy finish we have seen on the Victor for many years.

It would be good to get the old girl sorted out!

Wasn’t there a bloke called Roger Brooks or something, that used to head a team of volunteers that maintained the Victor in a very good display condition? Wonder what happened to them, as she seems to have suffered and deteriorated alot since they left.
