Did any of the British posters see the programme on BBC2 last nite at 8pm, presented by Jeremey Clarkson about the winners of the Victoria Cross?
Excellent insight into the actions of some of the winners and presented with great respect and awe from Jeremy towards the actions of the winners.
In particular the WW1 pilot who got attacked by 9 fighters, had his leg shot off, disentangled it from the controls, then proceeded to drive the fighters of.He headed back to base landed and filed a report on the flight before receiving medical attention.
Or the Gurkha who was badly wounded in his foxhole by a grenade. He then proceeded to load and fire his single shot rifle with only his left hand and when the fight was over over 30 bodies of the enemy lay around his foxhole out of 87 killed by his unit.
He also told the story of one of the commanding officers in Arnhem during Operation Market Garden. The man was an absolute hero and lost many under his command in one sided battles. After telling his whole story he then revealed that he was married to the mans daughter but the soldier had neglected to mention he was a Victoria Cross winner to her.
Lots of balls shown by a series of great warriors who fought for the Empire and beyond.

…he’s not far wrong is he?
Everyday we read about the yob culture in this country, about gangs of youths who think they’re tough beating up old people and anyone who looks at em the wrong way…..I wonder how they would react in Major Cains shoes.
Perhaps we should bring back National Service and teach em some discipline and respect, but the trouble is we might be contravening their human rights if the nice corporal shouted at them to loud!
If this post sounds cynical it supposed to be, ‘cos that’s the kind of society we now live in, a society where we’d walk past some one who was being beaten up cos we dont wanna get involved, if Major Robert Cain adopted that attitude a lot of soldiers wouldnt have got home alive.
All those guys deserved their VCs, they showed bravery, spirit, and selflessness in the face of enormous adversity.
*Im sure I can hear “Land of hope and Glory” playing somewhere*
