I understood separation on this crowded tourist route is by altitude. Choppers at one level, fixed wing another.

According to the BBC news an Air traffic controller has been suspended after it became known that they were making a private phone call when the two craft collided… unbelievable.! There supervisor has also been suspended pending an investigation.
