VIDEO: where was this "low-ish" Spitfire looping filmed?

This was a awesome big looping maneuver by the Spitfire, with a really low pass at the bottom of the loop.

After 0.25 this Spitfire hasn’t got that much height left…

The solo started with a reverse cuban (pull up into the vertical, roll 180 degrees and pull over the top) and included a half cuban with a 360 degree aileron roll at the top (another Smith Spitfire trademark!). Off the top of my head, pilots who fly rolls at the top of a loop or half cuban include Pete Kynsey, Ed Shipley (four point roll at the top of a loop!) Frédéric Akary and, on one occasion that I’ve seen, Eric Goujon. I’m sure there are other aerobatic pilots who fly similar figures too. I’m sure I’ve seen one of the Salis boys do it in a Yak-11 too.

Fascinating fact for y’all there.:very_drunk:

If I recall this display correctly did it not include several vertical climbing rolling manoeuvres. I remember thinking that you don’t see that very often in a spitfire!

:apologetic: I take back my original comment. Now i can place where it is i can see where the flight path was going, i was also thrown by the engine noise from another plane which at first was out of sight.
Sorry .

This was filmed at Duxford down to the far right of the Tank Bank. It’s during the finale at the September 2010 Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary Airshow with the Brian Smith at the controls of MH434. It was magical, he knew exactly what he was doing.

Indeed.

Nothing dodgy or dangerous there.

Definitely Duxford, and the ‘popping back’ noises are the other Spitfires bringing the power back for landing as mentioned.

Cheers

That’s a Smith trademark, the low-level B-axis pullout – he’s been doing it for as long as I can remember (there’s great footage of him doing the same manoeuvre in the same aircraft at, I think, Flying Legends 1995 on the VHS/DVD release) in everything from MH434 to the Thunderbolt. Hell of a display pilot!

The crackling would indeed be from the recovering Spitfires.

That was an awesome finale to a top show. If you haven’t, seek out the footage of the full sequence, it’s well worth a watch.

EDIT to add a photo – it doesn’t seem to be as low as the angle in the video suggests.

It wasn’t a bad day…

It’s Duxford for sure. Looks to me like the 2010 Battle of Britain air show. Brian Smith solo in MH434 concluding the sixteen-ship Spitfire sequence.

Looks fine to me. Just kept nose down to finish with a low pass

Hi Duxford ? The car park after the tank bank.

Yeah I’d have said Duxford too.

I’d guess Biggin – But it’s no more than a guess based on the topography and the executive jets.

I think the popping and farting is coming from other Merlins being throttled back and landing. I would hazard that it was probably Mr H senior and therfore under complete control.:applause:

It didn’t sound very healthy either,i would suspect that wasn’t a planned loop ,if it was he was pushing it abit.
