I would welcome any advice on videoing with a DSLR (settings etc). I took some videos at Clacton, but for the most
part they were pretty awful. One thing I do know, I need to get a viewfinder for the hot shoe. Using the display on the
LCD in daylight, is nigh on impossible while in live view.

Thanks. Yes that is an option, and what I use on my telescope.
It’s the settings which are causing more of a problem. I didn’t have the camera set for continual focus,
the aperture ans shutter setting were all over the place too. My wife was having more luck with the
Canon bridge camera.
Something which fits securely on the hot shoe will be better, as it helps to steady the camera when held to the eye.

Try a ‘red dot sight’ as used in air-rifle/pistol shooting – they are relatively cheap, from about £20 or so. You will need an adaptor to fit a RDS onto your hot-shoe, there’s a firm called Photosolve who make a gadget called Extend-a-Sight which is available off the i/net for about $30.
Another way to get round the problem may be to buy a loupe which fits round the rear screen, these are available from specialist photo retailers.
