I was just wondering if anyone knows any good view points at Tokyo Narita, just booked my flights on virgin atlantic, so fingers crossed I get an Airbus A340-600.
I assume with an airport like Tokyo the best views are likely to be from the departure lounges ?

Thanks for the information on Narita and Haneda airports. Will have to make a visit to both airports from the sounds of it.

As NRT now has a second (shorter) runway in operation there is no place that offers views of all movements (unfortunately) However if you are feeling more adventurous than it is well worth making the trip to Haneda where you will still see a lot of widebodys on domestic services. The coach costs 3000 yen each way and takes about 75 minutes depending on traffic etc. The older terminal at Haneda has an observation deck on its roof giving very good views of 1 runway with the other main runway being behind a new terminal. Not sure when this will be opened but was looking complete last year and as I recall will be used by ANA with the current terminal remaining for JAL.

The are decks on the roof of both terminals; newer T2 handles more interesting airlines and overlooks taxiway between terminals/runways.
Thanks for the tip – I am definitely going to have to plan an afternoon at the airport. Sounds like I will see some interesting traffic.

When are you going? I’m rostered a NRT later this month…on the A346.
EDIT – just seen in your sig that you aren’t going until Aug.

there is an observation deck but it seems to be facing the sun. I’d love to go there nonetheless! maybe in, ooh, 60 years?

Can’t tell you what to expect in the way of viewing facilities, but Virgin Atlantic does use the A340-600 on the route.
